Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER'S CONFESSION

The cabin was freezing, heated only by a small, crackling stone fireplace that cast long, dancing shadows across the rough wooden walls. Clara had seated the girls around an old wooden table, feeding them warm broth and pieces of bread, her hands trembling so violently she kept spilling the spoon.

The girls, sensing an inexplicable, deep connection to this stranger, didn't show an ounce of fear. They chattered happily, dipping their bread into the soup while Clara stared at them with an expression of pure, agonizing devotion.

David and I stood near the doorway, watching the scene unfold with a mixture of profound awe and lingering dread. Margaret stood beside Clara, gently stroking her scarred temple.

"How?" David finally broke the silence, his voice low and solemn. "Clara... how did this happen? The agency told us you were an anonymous surrogate. They gave us all the paperwork. They said our genetic material was fused in a petri dish."

Clara looked up, her gaze hardening with a bitter, vindictive fire. She stood slowly, walking over to an old wooden desk in the corner, and pulled out a thick, leather-bound file stamped with the red confidential seal of Apex International.

"They lied to both of us," Clara said, her voice shaking with rage. "They lied to you to sell you a miracle. And they lied to me to turn me into a captive breeder."

She slammed the file down on the table, flipping open the pages to reveal dense financial contracts, medical charts, and wire transfer receipts.

"I needed money for my mother’s medical treatments five years ago," Clara explained, her eyes fixed on the flickering flames of the fireplace. "Apex approached me. They offered a hundred thousand dollars for a standard gestational surrogacy contract. I signed it blindly. I was desperate. But three months into the pregnancy, during a routine ultrasound at their private clinic in Geneva, I realized something was wrong."

She pointed to a medical chart marked with highlighter.

"They weren't using your embryos, Elena. Or at least, not only yours. Apex runs an illegal underground program called Project Genesis. They harvest eggs from healthy, genetically superior surrogates and fuse them with elite donor profiles—often anonymous billionaires, scientists, and politicians who pay millions to cultivate superior offspring outside official legal channels. They called it 'genetic enhancement masking.'"

My knees buckled. David caught me just in time, lowering me into a wooden chair.

"Masking?" I whispered, my voice hollow. "Are you saying..."

"I'm saying your eggs and mine were combined in a multi-parent fertilization protocol," Clara said, tears spilling over her lashes. "The agency needed wealthy, legally verified parents like you to adopt and launder the children through official legal channels, while they kept the surrogates trapped in facility silos as breeding stock for future contracts. When I discovered the truth—that these three little girls carried my complete genetic blueprint alongside the elite donor profile they forced me to accept—I tried to abort the contract. That’s when they tried to kill me."

David stared at Clara in sheer horror. "If they wanted you dead... how did you escape?"

"A sympathetic doctor on the inside," Clara whispered, touching the jagged scar on her temple. "He switched my file with a Jane Doe who had died of natural causes in the ICU, faked the cremation records, and smuggled me out in a laundry cart. I’ve been living in hiding ever since, watching you from afar, praying every single day that you were taking good care of my angels."

The cabin fell into a dead, suffocating silence. The fire crackled softly in the background.

Suddenly, the wind howling outside shifted. A low, mechanical rumble echoed through the dense pine trees.

Headlights swept across the cabin's frosted windows, painting the walls in blinding beams of white light.

Margaret gasped, rushing to the window and pulling back the edge of the blackout curtain. "They found us. There's a whole convoy of them."
