Chapter 10 - THE NEW EQUATIONSix months later, the business pages of the Wall Street Journal carried a surprising front-page headline: Crosswell Industries Announces Merger with Cole Logistics, Appoints New Chief Operations Officer.

The financial markets reacted with initial confusion. Wall Street analysts scrambled to figure out who Nathan Cole was—a man who had no pedigree, no Ivy League degree, and no history in high-stakes corporate raiding.

They didn't know that the real merger hadn't happened in a boardroom, but across a kitchen table in a penthouse overlooking Columbus, where a six-year-old girl was currently teaching the most feared CEO in the Midwest how to draw a proper T. rex in pancake batter.

Julian Whitmore’s marriage lasted forty-three days before ending in a messy, tabloid-fodder divorce that drained half of his family’s manufacturing fortune. He tried calling Adeline’s office twice; both times, Mara Bennett intercepted the calls, smiled brightly, and hung up without a word.

Down in supply operations, Nathan’s old desk remained empty. In its place, on the fortieth floor, a new corner office was built—one with glass walls, but with a door that was always, unmistakably open.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the Ohio horizon, painting the sky in shades of amber and emerald, Adeline stood at her office window with a cup of coffee in one hand.

The door clicked open, and heavy footsteps approached. A warm, familiar jacket draped over her shoulders, followed by a pair of arms wrapping securely around her waist.

“Working late, CEO?” Nathan murmured against her neck.

Adeline leaned back against his chest, closing her eyes as she listened to the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart.

“Just recalibrating the variables,” she whispered, smiling into the dark. “And for the first time in my life, everything fits.”
