Chapter 8 - THE DEVASTATING BLOWNathan took one final, deliberate step toward the head table, bringing himself toweringly close to Julian and the trembling bride.

“Mr. Whitmore built an empire of glass,” Nathan said, his voice dropping to a low, devastating rumble that echoed off the crystal chandeliers. “He thinks that by cutting away what doesn't fit, he’s made himself secure.”
Nathan’s eyes flicked briefly to Vivian Ashford, then back to Julian.
“But an empire built on fear isn't a life, Julian. It’s a museum of things you were too cowardly to keep.” Nathan paused, a faint, pitying smile touching his lips. “And the saddest part of all? You invited the smartest woman in Ohio to watch you marry your own panic.”
Nathan turned his back on the head table without another word.
The silence held for five full seconds—a vacuum of sound and breath where two hundred people forgot how the world worked.
Then, Nathan walked back down the aisle, pulled out his chair at table one, and sat down beside Adeline. He picked up his fork and resumed eating his duck as if he had just commented on the weather.
Adeline sat frozen, her chest heaving slightly. Every barrier, every defense mechanism, every defensive wall she had spent seven years constructing around her heart didn't just crumble—it dissolved into mist.
She looked at Nathan Cole. For the first time in her life, she wasn't looking at an employee, an escort, or a variable in a plan.

She was looking at home.
Across the room, Julian Whitmore tried to speak, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, but no sound came out. The wedding cake sat untouched behind him. The illusion was shattered beyond repair.
