Chapter 6 - The Ambush at the DoorJanelle stood up, startled. “Who could that be?”

Before she could reach the latch, the lock turned with a sharp click, and the door swung open.
Standing in the doorway was Richard Pierce, flanked by two burly private security guards. His expensive overcoat was dusted with sleet, and a triumphant, venomous smile twisted his lips.
“Well, well, well,” Richard sneered, stepping into the tiny hallway and taking in the modest surroundings with open disgust. “So this is where our fearless CEO has been hiding. Playing house in a tenement while your company burns to the ground.”
Nathan stepped in front of Janelle, his frame rigid, his eyes flashing with sudden, cold fury. “Get out of this apartment, Richard. Right now.”
“Oh, spare me the tough-guy routine,” Richard laughed, snapping a photo with his phone before his guards could stop him. “This is going to look fantastic on the front page of every tabloid tomorrow morning. Billionaire CEO Abandons Post for Secret Romance with Working-Class Nurse. The board will tear you apart by noon tomorrow.”
Janelle stepped out from behind Nathan, her voice cutting through the tension like a razor.
“You broke into my home,” she said, her voice terrifyingly calm. “You insulted my life, and you threatened my family. Get out of my apartment before I call the police and have you dragged out in handcuffs.”
Richard blinked, finally noticing the fierce, unyielding dignity in her eyes. But he waved a dismissive hand. “Save your breath, nurse. The board meeting is tomorrow morning at nine sharp. If Nathan isn’t in his chair, he’s finished. Pierce Global will be mine.”

He turned and strode out into the hallway, his guards following closely behind.
The door clicked shut, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in the room.
