Chapter 4 - The Bride’s AwakeningBefore Daniel could formulate a response, the private elevator at the end of the ballroom dinged.

The doors slid open, and Emily Mercer stepped out, radiant in a heavily beaded white lace gown, her veil catching the light of the crystal chandeliers. Her fiancé, Ryan, stood beside her, smiling proudly.
“Mom! Daniel!” Emily called out, gathering her skirt as she walked toward the central table. “Oh, the lighting looks amazing! Did the florist fix the peonies—?”
She stopped dead in her tracks.
The atmosphere in the ballroom was so thick with tension that even a stranger could have cut it with a knife. The photographers were clustered in a semi-circle around our table. Julian Vance stood like a sentinel. Vanessa Cole looked like she wanted the marble floor to open up and swallow her whole. And I stood opposite Daniel, holding a pen like a weapon.
“What… what is going on?” Emily asked, her smile fading as she looked from her mother’s pale face to her brother’s terrified expression. “Why is everyone staring? Why is Vanessa sitting at the family table? Where is Claire’s seat?”
Patricia rushed to her daughter, fluttering her hands nervously. “Sweetheart, nothing is wrong! Just a little family rearrangement—your brother’s friend needed a seat, and Claire was being difficult—”
“Mom, don't lie to her,” Ryan said, stepping forward. He had always disliked Daniel’s arrogance and had never trusted Vanessa. He looked at me, then at Julian. “Ms. Bennett? Is everything alright with the venue contract?”
I turned to Ryan and offered a warm, genuine smile. “Everything is fine, Ryan. In fact, the venue contract is fully secured. But there has been a slight adjustment to the guest list and the financial backing of the event.”
Emily looked at her brother. “Daniel? What did you do?”
Daniel opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His career, his company, his social standing, and his entire life’s illusions were collapsing around him in real-time.
Vanessa tried to salvage the situation. She stood up, smoothing her emerald gown, putting on her best corporate-presentation smile. “Emily, honey, don't stress on your wedding day. There’s just been a misunderstanding regarding corporate partnerships. Claire is upset about personal matters and is trying to mix business with family—”
“Shut up, Vanessa,” Emily snapped, her voice ringing out sharp and clear across the ballroom.
Vanessa blinked in shock. “Excuse me?”
“I said, shut up,” Emily repeated, glaring at the other woman. “You were only invited to this wedding because my mother insisted you were a crucial business asset. But I’ve seen the way you look at my brother, and I’ve heard the way you talk about Claire behind her back when she’s been the one quietly paying for half the family dinners we’ve had this year.”
Patricia gasped. “Emily! How can you talk to your guests like that? On your wedding day!”
“This is my wedding day,” Emily shot back, her eyes filling with angry tears as she looked at her mother. “And for months, you and Daniel have treated Claire like a servant while she supported this family behind the scenes. Do you think I'm blind, Mom? Do you think I didn't notice how you treat her?”
She turned her gaze back to me, her expression softening with genuine remorse. “Claire… I am so sorry. I didn't know they were going to pull this stunt today.”
“I know you didn't, Emily,” I said gently. “Enjoy your wedding. This has nothing to do with you.”
May you like
“Oh, but it does,” Julian Vance interjected, tapping the manila folder. “Because Mercer Construction is the primary sponsor of this wedding reception. Or rather, they were supposed to pay for it.”
Julian looked directly at Daniel. “And since Bennett Logistics just foreclosed on your corporate accounts, Mr. Mercer, you no longer have the funds to clear the catering invoice. In fact, your company credit cards have just been frozen.”
