Chapter 5 - Frozen AssetsThe words hung in the air like a death sentence.

Frozen.

Daniel’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out with trembling fingers, his eyes darting across the screen. An alert from his corporate banking app flashed in bright red letters: ACCOUNT FROZEN. OVERDRAFT WARNING. LIEN ENFORCED BY BENNETT LOGISTICS.

“No,” Daniel whispered, shaking his head in denial. “No, this isn't real. You can't do this. We have pending municipal contracts! We have public bids!”

“You had public bids,” I corrected him, stepping closer so that only he could hear. “Until yesterday, when I reviewed your engineering compliance reports and discovered you were using substandard steel to cut costs on the municipal bridge project. I reported the violations to the city inspector this morning.”

Daniel’s face turned corpse-white. He grabbed my shoulders, his fingers digging in with desperate fury. “You what?! You reported my company?! Are you insane?! That’s a federal investigation! I’ll go to prison!”

Before Daniel could finish his sentence, two uniformed police officers accompanied by a plainclothes detective walked through the grand double doors of the ballroom.

The lead detective flashed a badge as he approached the central table. “Daniel Mercer?”

The entire ballroom fell into a stunned, breathless silence. The wedding guests, who had just begun streaming in through the doors, froze in place, staring at the unfolding spectacle.

“I am Detective Miller, Financial Crimes Division,” the officer said, his voice clipped and professional. “Mr. Mercer, you are being placed under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement of subcontractor funds, and falsification of municipal safety compliance records.”

Patricia let out a piercing shriek and threw herself over her son. “You can't arrest him! This is a wedding! My son is an honorable businessman! This is a setup! Claire, tell them it’s a setup!”

Daniel stood paralyzed as the detective gently but firmly pulled his arms behind his back and slapped the steel handcuffs around his wrists. The cold click of the cuffs echoed through the silent room like a gavel slamming down in a courtroom.

Vanessa backed away slowly, trying to blend into the crowd of arriving guests, hoping nobody would notice her emerald gown and her proximity to the disgraced contractor.

“And you, Ms. Cole,” Detective Miller added, turning his head slightly toward Vanessa. “You might want to stay right where you are. We have financial wire records showing embezzled funds transferred directly into your personal offshore accounts.”

Vanessa froze, her face losing every trace of its polished, arrogant composure. Her silver clutch slipped from her trembling fingers, hitting the marble floor with a sharp clatter.
