Chapter 5 - The Hand-Off

The next morning, the air was bitter cold as Norah walked into an abandoned warehouse on the Chicago docks. In her hand was a black duffel bag containing the ledger.
Inside her ear, a tiny, invisible earpiece crackled.
"I'm in position," Stellan’s voice whispered in her ear. "My snipers have the perimeter. Just hand over the bag, get your brother, and get out."
The warehouse was dark, smelling of rust and dead fish. Standing in the center of the room was a man in a long wool coat—Victor, the ruthless leader of the Syndicate. Beside him, two armed guards held Danny, who was bruised and shaking.
"Ah, the brave little mermaid," Victor sneered as Norah approached. "Did you bring the prize?"
"Let my brother go first," Norah said, trying to keep her voice steady.
"The book first, girl."
Norah threw the bag at his feet.
One of the guards opened it, flipping through the ledger. He nodded to Victor. "It's the real deal. All the offshore accounts are here."
"Excellent," Victor smiled, pulling a gun from his coat. "Now, about your brother..."
"Take cover, Norah! Now!" Stellan shouted in her ear.
Before Victor could pull the trigger, the glass skylight above them shattered.
Flashbang grenades rained down, exploding in a blinding flash of white light and deafening noise. Armed men in black tactical gear stormed the warehouse. Gunfire erupted, the echoes deafening.
"Danny!" Norah screamed, lunging forward.
She tackled her brother to the ground as bullets ripped through the air. Stellan appeared from the shadows like a ghost, his gun firing with lethal precision. He took down two of Victor's guards in seconds.
Victor scrambled backward, grabbing the ledger and running toward a waiting speedboat docked at the back of the warehouse, which opened directly onto the frozen river.
"He's escaping!" Norah cried.
Stellan sprinted after him, but Victor reached the boat, starting the engine.
But as the boat sped away into the icy water, Stellan didn't look angry. He slowly lowered his gun, a cold, victorious smile on his face.

"Stellan?" Norah asked, running up to him with Danny in tow. "He got the ledger! He has all your secrets!"
Stellan turned to look at her, his eyes dark and glittering. "He has a ledger, yes. But not mine."
