Chapter 7 - THE FINAL PIECE OF THE PUZZLEMy hand trembled slightly as I reached out and lifted the leather-bound notebook from the cardboard box. The familiar, elegant cursive handwriting on the yellowed pages belonged to my grandmother—the woman who had been driven to ruin by the very family that had later tried to make me their servant.

"Where did you find this?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, all my defensive armor momentarily cracking.

"My... my grandfather kept it," Julian said quietly, shifting his weight from foot to foot. "Not to destroy it. Not to hide it. It was locked in his private wall safe behind his study desk. When the federal marshals cleared the estate, I... I managed to slip it out before they locked the doors. I figured you’d want it."

I looked up at him, searching his face for some hidden trick, some final manipulation. But there was nothing left. Just a hollow, broken shell of a man who had finally realized that the system he worshipped was built on sand.

"Why are you giving this to me, Julian?" I asked. "You could have used it as leverage. You could have tried to bargain with me."

Julian shook his head slowly, looking down at his worn shoes. "Leverage? With what? You took everything, Elena. You didn't just beat us—you exposed the rot at the very center of everything we were. I spent my whole life trying to please a father who viewed me as nothing more than an extension of his own ego. And when you walked out of that dining room with that knife... I realized I was just as much a prisoner as you were."

He took a slow step back toward the elevator lobby, the doors sliding open behind him with a soft chime.

"I’m leaving the city," Julian said softly, not looking back as he stepped into the elevator car. "I don't want their money. I don't want their name. I just want... to figure out who I am when I'm not hiding behind a legacy."

The elevator doors slid shut, sealing him away in silence. I stood in the doorway of my penthouse for a long time, holding my grandmother's journal against my chest.
