CHAPTER 1 — The Dog Everyone Thought Had Gone Crazy

When our eight-month-old daughter started coughing, we believed it was nothing more than a seasonal illness.

We had no idea our family was already living beside a nightmare.

At first, the cough sounded harmless.

Then it became deeper.

Harsher.

Every single night, the sound echoed through our home like something was trapped inside her tiny lungs.

Sometimes she coughed so violently that her little face turned bright red.

Other times...

She simply stopped breathing for several terrifying seconds.

Those moments felt like forever.

I would leap from bed, place trembling fingers beneath her tiny nose, praying to feel warm air against my skin.

Only then would I breathe again.

Our pediatrician diagnosed infant asthma.

"It happens," he assured us.

He prescribed inhalers.

Medication.

Humidifiers.

We followed every instruction perfectly.

Nothing changed.

If anything...

Our daughter became weaker.

She barely smiled anymore.

She stopped finishing her bottles.

Dark circles appeared beneath her tiny eyes.

The cheerful little girl who once giggled whenever Daisy wagged her tail had become frighteningly quiet.

Then our golden retriever started acting strangely.

Daisy had always been the gentlest dog imaginable.

She slept beside the crib every night.

She carefully licked spilled baby food from the floor.

She even barked whenever strangers approached our front door.

But one morning everything changed.

The moment I stepped out of the nursery...

SCRATCH!

SCRATCH!

SCRATCH!

I rushed back.

Daisy was attacking the wall directly behind the crib.

Not chewing toys.

Not digging the carpet.

The wall.

She clawed it with unbelievable determination, scattering pieces of wallpaper across the room.

"Daisy! Stop!"

She looked at me...

Whined softly...

Then immediately continued scratching.

Every.

Single.

Day.

No matter how many times I moved the crib...

She always returned to the exact same spot.

She ignored food.

Ignored toys.

Ignored treats.

She wanted only one thing.

That wall.

Eventually I installed a baby gate.

She knocked it over.

I locked the nursery door.

She scratched outside the door for hours.

When I finally opened it...

She sprinted directly toward the wall again.

Within days, blood stained her paws.

Her nails were nearly worn flat.

Still...

She refused to stop.

I cried from exhaustion.

Our baby wasn't sleeping.

Neither were we.

Medical bills kept piling up.

The nursery wall looked destroyed.

My husband finally whispered what we were both thinking.

"I think Daisy's losing her mind."

The next evening, after another sleepless night, I walked into the nursery...

And froze.

The wall had a hole nearly the size of a basketball.

Broken drywall covered the carpet.

Dust filled the air.

Daisy was desperately trying to make the opening even bigger.

Something inside me snapped.

I grabbed her collar.

Pulled her away.

Yelled louder than I ever had before.

She didn't growl.

She didn't fight.

She only stared at me...

Almost pleading.

Then she looked back toward the dark hole.

Over.

And over.

And over again.

Still furious, I knelt down to inspect the damage.

At first...

I saw nothing but darkness.

Then...

Something inside the wall moved.

The moment my flashlight illuminated the opening...

May you like

Every drop of blood drained from my face.

I screamed.
