Chapter 2 - The Flashbang on Silver LaneThe scream shattered the cold rain like thin glass. Upstairs, a muffled scuffle echoed through the thick mahogany doors, followed by the sickening thud of a heavy body hitting the floorboards.

Julian’s smug facade evaporated instantly. The bat in his hand slipped an inch down his shoulder as panic flickered in his eyes. He lunged forward, raising the heavy wooden club. “You shouldn’t have come here, old man. You’ve sealed her fate—and yours.”
Arthur stepped onto the porch, his bourbon sloshing over the crystal rim. “Julian, don’t do anything foolish in front of witnesses. The local police chief dines at our estate every Sunday. Whatever happens here tonight will be written the way we command.”
Miriam didn't even blink. Her voice was like ice water. “Get rid of him, Julian. We can't have outsiders interfering with family discipline.”
They still thought they held all the cards. They thought wealth and political influence could buy immunity from a father’s wrath. But they didn’t know the tracking software I had installed on Audrey’s phone wasn't just recording audio; it was actively live-streaming encrypted telemetry data directly to three federal servers and a secure backup archive shared with the state prosecutor’s special strike force.
Julian swung the baseball bat in a savage horizontal arc meant to crack my ribs.
I didn't flinch. Years of close-quarters combat training in the military didn't vanish just because I spent my days wrenching grease-stained transmissions. As the bat whistled through the humid night air, I stepped sharply inside his reach, pivoting on my heel and driving the heel of my palm upward into the hinge of his jaw.
The impact was explosive. Julian shrieked, dropping the bat as he stumbled backward, clutching his shattered nose while blood gushed between his fingers.
Arthur dropped his bourbon glass, shattering it against the stone floor. “Guards! Get out here now!”
From the shadows of the expansive landscaped yard, two burly private security guards in rain-slicked tactical gear came sprinting around the corner of the mansion, batons drawn.
“Federal investigator, United States Department of Justice, Public Corruption and Special Crimes Division,” I barked, my voice cutting through the storm with absolute, razor-sharp authority. I flipped open my heavy leather credential wallet, flashing the gold badge and holographic seal under the porch light. “Stand down or you will be prosecuted as accessories to felony kidnapping and unlawful confinement under federal jurisdiction.”
The two guards froze dead in their tracks. Private security contractors hired by rich, corrupt families were tough against unarmed civilians, but federal felony charges carrying mandatory twenty-year sentences had a way of chilling their enthusiasm real fast. They looked at Arthur, then at me, and slowly lowered their batons, stepping back into the rain.
“You’re bluffing!” Arthur roared, his face turning a deep, apoplectic purple. “My brother is a federal judge! I’ll have your badge before midnight!”
May you like
“Your brother’s docket is currently being audited by the attorney general's internal affairs unit,” I replied coldly, stepping past Julian, who was groaning on the floor. “And you, Arthur, are about to find out what happens when you mistake a grieving father for a retired mechanic.”
I kicked open the heavy oak front door, sending it crashing against the interior wall, and sprinted toward the grand staircase.
