Chapter 5 - THE CRASH AND THE DISCOVERY"Code Blue! Room 412! We are losing her!" Dr. Harrison yelled, lunging forward.

"Get out! Both of you, please, step into the hallway!" a nurse shouted, pushing Daniel and me backward out the door as crash carts rushed past us.
The heavy wooden door slammed shut in our faces.
I slid down the cold, white-tiled wall of the hospital corridor, pulling my knees to my chest, letting out a shriek of absolute agony that echoed off the sterile walls. Daniel dropped beside me, burying his face in his hands, his massive frame shaking with raw, unconsolable grief.
We sat there for twenty agonizing minutes—twenty minutes that felt like an eternity in hell.
Finally, the door clicked open. Dr. Harrison stepped out, pulling off his surgical mask. He looked exhausted, his forehead slick with sweat, but a faint, tired relief washed over his features.
"We stabilized her," Dr. Harrison said softly, kneeling down in front of us. "It was a very close call. Her immune system is entirely compromised, Valeria. If she goes through another shock like that, I don't know if her body can handle it. She needs peace, stability, and emotional comfort right now. Whatever is stressing her out... you need to shield her from it completely."
"Thank you, Doctor... thank you," Daniel whispered, shaking the doctor's hand.
As Dr. Harrison walked away, Daniel helped me to my feet. We walked into Sofía’s room in heavy, exhausted silence. She was sleeping now, hooked up to a tangle of new IV lines, her chest rising and falling in slow, rhythmic motions.
We sat by her bedside through the entire night, watching every breath, terrified that the monitor would scream again.
When the sun finally began to peek through the hospital blinds the next morning, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket.
It was an unknown number.
I pulled it out, stepping quietly out into the hallway to answer. "Hello?"
"Mrs. Vance?" a sharp, professional voice asked. "My name is Detective Miller with the local police department. I'm calling from the downtown precinct."
My heart stopped. "Police? Is this about Carmen? Did she report us?"
"No, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said, his tone grim and matter-of-fact. "Your mother-in-law, Carmen Vance, did not report you. But we received an emergency call about an hour ago regarding a vehicular accident involving her white sedan on Route 9."
The hallway seemed to tilt sideways. "An accident? Is she... is she okay?"
"Mrs. Vance, your mother-in-law is currently in critical condition at Metro General Hospital," the detective said slowly. "And there is something else you need to know. When our forensic team searched her vehicle at the crash site, they found something very unusual in her glove compartment—something that prompted us to pull her home security footage and phone records from yesterday."
"What are you talking about?" I breathed, my hand trembling so hard I could barely hold the phone. "What did she have in her car?"
Detective Miller paused, letting out a heavy sigh. "She had a legal document, Mrs. Vance. A notarized petition for emergency grand-parental custody and full guardianship of your children, filed yesterday afternoon—backed by forged medical evaluations claiming you and your husband were mentally unfit and neglecting your children's medical care."

My breath caught in my throat. Carmen hadn't just cut Mateo's hair out of malice or snobbery.
She was executing a calculated, meticulous plan to steal my children away from us entirely.
