Chapter 6 - THE WEB OF DECEITThe hospital hallway seemed to spin around me. I leaned my shoulder heavily against the cold drywall to keep from collapsing.

"Guardianship?" I repeated, the word tasting like ash and poison in my mouth. "Carmen filed for emergency guardianship of my children behind our backs?"
"Yes, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller’s voice echoed through the speaker. "And it goes deeper than that. When our cybercrime unit looked into her phone records this morning, we found a series of financial transactions dating back over six months. She has been systematically transferring large sums of money out of a family trust fund—a trust fund that was originally established by your late father-in-law specifically for Sofía’s medical treatments."
A cold sweat broke out across my back. Sofía’s medical trust. The fund holding the remaining $150,000 for her upcoming experimental therapies.
"She stole Sofía’s medical money?" I whispered, my voice cracking with absolute disbelief.
"We are freezing her accounts right now pending a full financial audit," Detective Miller replied. "Furthermore, the security footage from the barbershop where she took your son yesterday morning shows something else very disturbing. She didn't just take him for a haircut. She specifically collected his hair clippings—all of them—and placed them into a plastic Ziploc bag before leaving."
My stomach churned violently. Why would Carmen collect Mateo's hair clippings? What kind of sick game was she playing?
"Detective, where is she right now?" I asked, my voice hardening into steel. "At Metro General?"
"Yes. She's in intensive care following a head-on collision on Route 9. Her car drifted into oncoming traffic. The other driver only sustained minor injuries, but Carmen... her condition is critical."
"I understand," I said tightly. "My husband and I will be down at the precinct as soon as we leave the hospital. Thank you, Detective."
I hung up the phone and stood frozen in the hallway for a long moment. How was I going to tell Daniel? My husband was already holding our family together by a microscopic thread, sitting by our dying daughter's bedside, grieving the loss of his mother's sanity, and now he had to learn that his own mother had tried to steal our children and loot our sick daughter's medical fund.
I pushed open the door to Room 412.
Daniel looked up from the chair, his eyes bloodshot and hollow. "Valeria? Who was on the phone?"
I walked over, knelt beside his chair, and took his shaking hands into mine. "Daniel... you need to be strong. Carmen didn't just kidnap Mateo yesterday. She had a plan. A much darker plan."
I told him everything—the emergency guardianship petition, the theft of Sofía’s medical trust, and the strange detail about the Ziploc bag of hair clippings.
Daniel didn't cry. He didn't shout. He simply sat there, staring blankly at the linoleum floor, as if a ghost had finally hollowed out his entire soul.
"My mother..." Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a quiet, devastating realization. "She was never just trying to fix Mateo's hair. She was erasing us. She was trying to build a legal case to prove we were unfit parents so she could take full control of our lives."
Suddenly, the door to the room creaked open.

Dr. Harrison stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder. His face was pale, and he looked deeply disturbed.
"Valeria, Daniel," Dr. Harrison said, closing the door softly behind him. "I'm glad you're both here. Something very strange just happened in the lab downstairs, and as Sofía’s oncologist, I need to ask you an urgent question."
