CHAPTER 1

The jungle had a way of swallowing people whole.
Not just their footprints... but their voices, their fears, and sometimes even their names.
For nearly twelve years, Ethan Carter had patrolled one of the largest protected rainforests in South America. Every twisted vine, every muddy trail, every distant animal call had become part of his daily life.
He wasn't rich.
He wasn't famous.
But he believed one thing with all his heart...
If nobody protected the jungle, nobody would.
That belief was exactly what almost got him killed.
The morning had begun peacefully. Mist floated between the giant trees while colorful parrots screamed overhead. Sunlight barely reached the forest floor.
Ethan noticed fresh boot prints crossing a protected trail.
Too large for tourists.
Too organized.
Too recent.
His stomach tightened.
Poachers.
He quietly followed the tracks for almost twenty minutes before hearing men's voices.
They weren't even trying to stay quiet.
Laughter echoed through the trees.
Metal clanked against metal.
Someone loaded a rifle.
Ethan carefully stepped from behind the bushes.
Four men immediately turned toward him.
Each carried military-style weapons.
Dead animals already hung from their packs.
One even had the spotted skin of a young jaguar rolled over his shoulder.
Ethan's heart sank.
"You have no right to hunt here," Ethan said firmly.
"This reserve is protected."
The tallest hunter slowly smiled.
"You must be the ranger."
"I've heard about you."
Another man laughed.
"The hero."
Ethan reached for the satellite radio clipped to his belt.
"I've already reported your location."
That was a lie.
There was no signal.
The men knew it immediately.
One casually pulled out a signal jammer from his backpack.
"No, you didn't."
Everything happened in seconds.
One slammed Ethan into a massive tree.
Another twisted both of his arms behind his back.
The third ripped away his radio.
The fourth punched him hard in the stomach.
Air exploded from his lungs.
Rough ropes wrapped around his wrists.
Then around his chest.
Then around his legs.
They tied him tighter and tighter until the bark dug into his skin.
Every attempt to move only made the ropes bite deeper.
The leader crouched in front of him.
"You know what the funny thing is?"
"No one knows you're here."
He smiled.
"And nobody is coming."
Another poacher pointed toward several bloody animal carcasses lying nearby.
"We've been hunting jaguars all week."
"They'll smell this place before sunset."
The men laughed.
One of them deliberately rubbed fresh animal blood across Ethan's boots.
Another splashed blood onto the ground around the tree.
"You wanted to protect wildlife..."
"Now let's see if wildlife protects you."
The leader leaned close enough for Ethan to smell alcohol on his breath.
"If a jaguar eats you..."
"It'll save us the trouble."
They walked away laughing.
Their voices slowly disappeared into the endless forest.
Silence returned.
A terrible silence.
Only insects.
Wind.
Leaves.
And Ethan's breathing.
He pulled against the ropes until his wrists bled.
Nothing.
Hours passed.
The tropical heat became unbearable.
Mosquitoes covered his face.
Ants crawled across his boots.
His shoulders burned from hanging against the tree.
His mouth became so dry he could barely swallow.
As darkness slowly approached, the jungle changed.
Birds stopped singing.
Monkeys disappeared.
Even the insects seemed quieter.
Something had entered the forest.
Something at the top of the food chain.
Then...
A deep growl rolled through the trees.
Not loud.
Not angry.
Confident.
Every instinct inside Ethan screamed the same word.
Jaguar.
Branches moved.
Leaves trembled.
A massive shadow stepped from the darkness.
The jaguar was enormous.
Its golden coat blended perfectly with the fading light.
Black rosettes covered powerful muscles that moved silently beneath its skin.
Its yellow eyes locked directly onto Ethan.
Neither blinked.
Neither moved.
The jaguar slowly approached.
One careful step.
Another.
Another.
Until it stood less than three feet away.
Ethan couldn't breathe.
The animal lifted one giant paw...
...and placed it against Ethan's chest.
Then the other.
Its enormous weight pressed him against the tree.
Its warm breath touched his face.
Its nose moved only inches from his eyes.
This was the end.
Ethan slowly closed his eyes...
Waiting for the bite.
Waiting for the pain.
Instead...
He felt something completely impossible.
The jaguar gently sniffed his face...
Turned its head toward the distant forest...
And suddenly let out a roar so powerful that the entire jungle seemed to shake.
It wasn't a hunting roar.
It sounded like...
A warning.
May you like
And somewhere far away...
Several human voices suddenly screamed.
