CHAPTER 1 — THEY LEFT HER TO DIE... BUT THE SAVANNAH HAD OTHER PLANS

Emily Carter had spent three years protecting animals that most people would only ever see in documentaries.

At twenty-six, she wasn't the strongest ranger in the reserve.

She wasn't the fastest.

But everyone knew one thing.

She never abandoned an animal in danger.

For months, the reserve had been bleeding.

Elephants disappeared.

Rhinos were found without their horns.

Lion cubs vanished without a trace.

Every crime pointed to the same invisible organization—a ruthless poaching syndicate worth millions.

No one could catch them.

Until Emily did.

One afternoon, while patrolling alone, she noticed fresh tire tracks leading into a protected zone where no vehicles were allowed.

Curiosity became suspicion.

Suspicion became proof.

Hidden inside thick acacia bushes, Emily filmed several armed men loading elephant tusks, leopard skins, and crates of illegal wildlife products into a truck.

Her hands shook as she recorded everything.

She knew if they saw her...

she would never leave alive.

Back at headquarters, her footage launched the largest anti-poaching raid in the reserve's history.

Police stormed warehouses.

Millions of dollars' worth of illegal wildlife products were seized.

International news covered the operation.

Several poachers were arrested.

But one man escaped.

Victor Kane.

The syndicate's ruthless leader.

As officers searched his abandoned camp, they found a message carved into a wooden table.

"Find the ranger."

Weeks passed.

Emily tried convincing herself the danger was over.

Then one hot afternoon, while patrolling alone, her SUV suddenly lost power.

The engine died.

Her radio crackled...

then went silent.

She stepped outside.

Nothing.

No birds.

No insects.

Only the wind.

Then...

five armed men emerged from the tall grass.

Victor smiled.

"You should've stayed behind your camera."

Emily reached for the emergency flare.

A rifle slammed into her shoulder.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Hours later...

she opened her eyes.

Her wrists burned.

Thick ropes held her against the trunk of an ancient baobab tree.

Miles from civilization.

No radio.

No phone.

No hope.

Victor crouched in front of her.

"You love animals so much..."

He smiled.

"Let's see if they love you back."

The men laughed as they drove away.

Their truck disappeared beyond the horizon.

Silence settled over the savannah.

Then dusk arrived.

Hyenas laughed somewhere far away.

Shadows stretched across the grass.

Emily screamed until her voice became nothing more than a whisper.

Then...

the grass began moving.

One lion stepped into the clearing.

Another followed.

Then three more.

Then six.

Within seconds...

an entire pride surrounded the tree.

At their center walked an enormous black-maned alpha male.

His amber eyes locked onto Emily.

He came closer.

Closer.

Until his nose was only inches from her face.

Emily closed her eyes...

certain she had only seconds left to live.

Instead...

the lion gently rubbed his massive head against her shoulder...

and let out a deep, familiar rumble.

Emily's eyes flew open.

"No..."

she whispered.

"It can't be..."

The scar above his left eye...

May you like

She knew that scar.

She had seen it before.
