Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT RAID ON STERLING MANOR

The iron security gates of the Sterling Estate loomed against the stormy night sky, topped with spiked wrought iron and automated surveillance cameras. Inside the sprawling three-story limestone mansion, a lavish dinner party was already underway. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, glittering glow across imported mahogany dining tables laden with caviar, roasted duck, and expensive vintage wines.
Vanessa Sterling laughed loudly, swirling a glass of Dom Pérignon as she regaled her socialite friends with a fabricated story about how "clumsy little Emma" had always been a hazard to herself.
"Honestly, darling, it was bound to happen," Vanessa shrugged, taking a sip. "The child has zero coordination. My father says the whole incident will blow over by Monday."
Suddenly, the massive front doors of the mansion didn't just knock—they exploded inward with a deafening crash.
"Police! State Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!"
Four tactical officers clad in heavy black ballistic gear swarmed the foyer, their automatic rifles raised, lasers painting the walls in crimson dots. Behind them strode Detective Thomas Vance, flanked by two state troopers.
The socialites shrieked, dropping wine glasses that shattered in expensive displays across the Italian marble floor. Several guests scrambled backward into the grand piano, their faces drained of all color.
Arthur Sterling pushed his chair back from the head of the table, his face turning a furious, apoplectic purple. He slammed his fist down on the mahogany.
"What the hell is the meaning of this?!" Arthur roared, marching toward the lead officer with indignant rage. "Do you have any idea who I am? I personally fund the Police Chief’s reelection campaign! I will have every single one of your badges by sunrise!"
Detective Vance stepped past the tactical officers, holding up a thick stack of legal documents and a search warrant signed by a federal judge.
"Shut your mouth, Arthur, and listen very carefully," Detective Vance commanded, his voice slicing through the chaos like a razor. He held up a portable speaker, pressing play.
The entire dining room echoed with the crystal-clear audio recording from the hospital waiting room: ‘You are going to sign the incident report stating Emma fell down the basement stairs, or I will ensure you never see a single penny of inheritance...’
Arthur’s jaw dropped. The color completely drained from his face, leaving him looking ancient and terrified. He turned his head slowly toward the doorway, where Vanessa stood frozen, her champagne glass slipping from her trembling fingers to smash against the floor.
"That... that's illegal! That recording was obtained without consent!" Arthur stammered, stepping backward.
"Under the Wiretap Act exceptions regarding ongoing felonies and extortion, it is 100% admissible in a federal court," Detective Vance smiled coldly. He motioned to the officers. "Arrest Arthur Sterling for obstruction of justice, witness intimidation, and accessory to aggravated assault."
"And arrest Vanessa Sterling," a cool, sharp voice echoed from the grand staircase.

All heads snapped upward. Standing on the landing was Rachel. She had changed into a sharp, black trench coat. Her eyes were piercing, filled with an unyielding fire. She walked down the steps, her heels clicking like a countdown to execution.
"Charge Vanessa with attempted murder in the first degree," Rachel said, stopping right in front of her trembling sister. "And let’s make sure she spends tonight in the exact same cold cell where she tried to send my daughter."
