Chapter 4 - The Secret HeirsWith Richard behind bars awaiting arraignment and his mother and Brooke scrambling to find a cheap motel that would accept their maxed-out debit cards, I thought the worst of the nightmare was finally over.

I spent the next three days completely focused on Ethan. We baked cookies in the expansive kitchen he now had free rein of, painted pictures on the patio, and slept with my arms wrapped tightly around him every single night. The dark circles under his eyes faded, replaced by his bright, infectious giggles.
Yet, lingering in the back of my mind was a nagging, uncomfortable question.
Why had Brooke and Vivian been so arrogantly confident? Why did they act as if they owned the house from the very first second I walked through the door? Richard was a narcissistic opportunist, but he wasn't brave enough to orchestrate an entire double life under my nose without a safety net.
The answer arrived on a rainy Thursday afternoon, tucked inside a bulky manila envelope delivered not by mail, but by a private courier who insisted on handing it directly to me with a signature requirement.
I sat at my executive desk, sliced open the envelope, and pulled out a stack of documents bearing the seal of a high-end private family law firm downtown.
As I read through the papers, the blood drained from my face.
It wasn't just a divorce filing from Richard's side. It was a paternity claim, a concealed pre-nuptial rider, and—most shocking of all—a series of legal papers proving that Richard hadn't just fathered Chloe with Brooke.
Brooke wasn’t a random mistress.
Brooke was Richard’s legal wife by common-law prior to our marriage in a different state—a marriage he had fraudulently concealed and never officially dissolved before he married me.
The room seemed to tilt.
If Richard and Brooke were legally married before we tied the knot... that meant my entire marriage to Richard was legally null and void.
More importantly? It meant that under state property laws, since our marriage was invalid due to his active bigamy, Richard and Brooke had spent years setting up a calculated legal trap to declare me the adulterous interloper and claim complete ownership of my father’s company and estate through a retroactive spousal support loophole.
They hadn't just been living under my roof as squatters. They had been waiting for the exact legal window to execute a complete corporate and personal takeover, leaving me legally stripped of everything I owned.
My hands trembled slightly as I held the papers. For a fleeting second, the sheer scale of their treachery made me dizzy. They hadn't just been cruel to my son; they had engineered a calculated, premeditated financial execution.
My phone rang, breaking the heavy silence of the office.
It was an unknown number with a local area code. I swiped to answer, pressing the phone to my ear.
"Ms. Whitman?" a smooth, chillingly polite voice asked. "I trust you received the courier package?"
May you like
"Who is this?" I demanded, my voice instantly hardening into steel.
"My name is Attorney Vance. I represent Mrs. Brooke Whitman—or, as the court records will soon officially establish, the primary legal spouse of Richard Whitman." There was a smug, predatory pause on the other end of the line. "Which means, my dear Amanda, that you are currently residing in our family estate illegally. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises, or we will have you forcibly removed by county authorities."
