CHAPTER ONE

The Woma

n Nobody Noticed
Opening
Madison Hale had spent six years becoming invisible.
Invisible women survived.
Invisible women kept their jobs.
Invisible women didn't get questioned about bruises that appeared beneath high collars or limps hidden behind polite smiles.
So when she arrived thirteen minutes late to the biggest meeting of her career, she apologized before anyone could criticize her.
"I'm sorry."
Those two words echoed across the polished conference room.
Every executive looked annoyed.
Only one man looked concerned.
Dante Romano.
The most feared businessman in Chicago.
The man newspapers called a billionaire developer.
The man federal agents quietly watched.
The man criminals whispered about with fear.
And the only man in the room who noticed she couldn't put weight on her left leg.
Body
Madison forced herself to breathe as numbers appeared on the screen.
Her presentation had taken weeks to prepare.
She spoke about transportation costs, warehouse expansion, supplier fraud, and projected profit margins with calm professionalism despite the sharp pain spreading through her ribs every time she inhaled.
No one interrupted.
Not because they respected her.
Because Dante Romano never looked away.
His dark eyes followed every movement.
Every pause.
Every tiny wince she tried to hide.
When she finished, the room remained silent.
Finally Dante closed the folder in front of him.
"Who prepared this analysis?"
Madison swallowed.
"I did."
He nodded once.
"It saved this company twenty-three million dollars."
Several executives looked shocked.
Her supervisor Karen smiled nervously.
"Madison is... surprisingly talented."
Surprisingly.
That single word hurt more than the bruises.
The meeting ended.
Executives rushed out discussing investments.
Madison stood.
Pain exploded through her hip.
She almost collapsed.
A hand caught the chair before it tipped.
Dante.
He didn't touch her.
He simply steadied the chair.
"You've broken at least one rib."
The hallway became silent.
Madison forced a smile.
"I slipped."
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"You were kicked."
Her blood froze.
Nobody knew.
Nobody could know.
Dante leaned slightly closer.
"My father beat my mother for fourteen years."
Madison couldn't breathe.
"I know exactly what someone protecting broken ribs looks like."
For the first time in years...
Someone saw the truth.
Without her saying a single word.
Ending
Madison stepped backward.
"I have to go."
She hurried toward the elevator.
Inside, her phone vibrated.
One message.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
He's watching you. Don't tell anyone what happened last night.
Attached was a photograph.
Someone had taken a picture...
Of her entering Romano Holdings that morning.
From across the street.
She wasn't just being abused.
May you like
She was being watched.
