š„ CHAPTER 2 ā THE WOMAN HE BURIED... WAS ALIVE

The man could barely breathe.
His name was Daniel Ashcroft.
Founder of one of the largest investment firms in New York.
For twenty years...
He had believed Marilyn died in a terrible car accident.
He had attended her funeral.
He had stood beside a closed coffin.
He had cried until sunrise.
Someone had lied.
"Take me to your mother."
The little girl hesitated.
"Mom doesn't like strangers."
"Please."
Something in his eyes convinced her.
They walked nearly forty minutes through abandoned streets.
Luxury buildings disappeared.
Broken apartments took their place.
Finally...
They stopped outside a crumbling building with shattered windows.
Inside...
Everything smelled of damp walls and old memories.
The apartment contained almost nothing.
One mattress.
One blanket.
Two plastic chairs.
A tiny boy slept beneath an oversized coat.
And beside the window...
A woman sat in a wheelchair.
Thin.
Pale.
Her hair streaked with gray before its time.
She slowly looked toward the door.
The grocery bag slipped from the girl's hands.
"Mom... someone wanted to meet you."
The woman lifted her eyes.
Time stopped.
Daniel couldn't speak.
Neither could she.
Finally...
Only one word escaped her lips.
"...Daniel?"
His knees nearly gave out.
"You..."
He whispered.
"They told me you were dead."
Marilyn laughed.
It wasn't joy.
It was the broken laugh of someone who had cried too long.
"They told me the same thing about you."
Confusion filled the room.
"What happened?"
Marilyn stared out the cracked window.
"Your father happened."
Daniel froze.
Twenty-one years earlier...
His billionaire father had hated Marilyn.
She was poor.
Worked two jobs.
Had no powerful family.
When Daniel refused an arranged marriage...
His father made a choice.
Marilyn was kidnapped after the accident.
Everyone was told she died.
Daniel was sent overseas.
Letters disappeared.
Phone calls vanished.
Every attempt to find each other...
Destroyed before either ever knew.
Then Marilyn quietly looked toward the sleeping boy.
"He isn't just her brother."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The little girl smiled sadly.
"He's my twin."
Daniel's eyes widened.
Twins?
"But..."
Marilyn reached beneath the mattress.
She removed an old envelope.
Inside...
Two birth certificates.
Both carried the same father's name.
Daniel Ashcroft.
His legs gave way.
For eight years...
His children had lived in poverty.
While he had been dining with billionaires.
May you like
He wasn't the victim.
He had become the man who never came home.
