CHAPTER 1 — THE MAID WHO NEVER LOOKED AWAY

On the morning she stood before the towering iron gates of the Ashford Mansion, Emily Carter carried nothing but a worn suitcase, a faded photograph, and twenty years of unanswered questions.

The mansion was exactly as she had imagined.

White marble columns.
Endless gardens.
Luxury cars parked in a perfect row.

It looked like the kind of home where nothing bad had ever happened.

Except...

It was the very place where she had disappeared as a little girl.

Emily had no proof.

Only a silver locket around her neck, a birthmark behind her left shoulder, and a memory she could never erase.

A woman crying.

A man shouting.

Bright headlights.

Then darkness.

Twenty years earlier, during a charity festival, three-year-old Emily had vanished without a trace.

The police searched for months.

Television stations covered the story.

The billionaire couple, Richard and Eleanor Ashford, offered a million-dollar reward.

But the child was never found.

Everyone believed she was dead.

Everyone...

Except the old homeless woman who found a frightened little girl wandering beside a highway hundreds of miles away.

That woman raised Emily with love despite having almost nothing.

She never hid the truth.

"You belong somewhere much bigger than this," she used to whisper.

"When the time is right... you'll find your family."

Before she died, she handed Emily the old photograph and the silver locket.

"There is only one place where these belong."

Now Emily stood before that place.

Not as the daughter.

Not as an heir.

But as a maid.

She intentionally hid her last name on the application.

She cut her hair shorter.

She wore oversized glasses.

Simple clothes.

No makeup.

She didn't come for money.

She came for answers.

The head housekeeper, Mrs. Gordon, barely looked at her résumé.

"You've worked as a cleaner?"

"Yes."

"Can you cook?"

"A little."

"Can you stay invisible?"

Emily hesitated.

"...I can try."

Mrs. Gordon smiled coldly.

"Good. Rich people love servants they don't notice."

Emily got the job immediately.

From the first day, she realized something strange.

Every hallway was filled with expensive paintings...

Except one empty wall near the grand staircase.

The wallpaper there had faded differently.

As if a large portrait had once hung there.

She asked another maid.

"What used to be there?"

The older woman became pale.

"Don't ask."

"Why?"

"It was the family portrait."

"What happened to it?"

"They removed it after..."

The woman lowered her voice.

"...after the little girl disappeared."

Emily froze.

That night, while cleaning the library, she noticed Richard Ashford sitting alone with a glass of whiskey.

His expression looked nothing like the powerful billionaire newspapers admired.

He looked...

Broken.

He opened a drawer.

Pulled out a tiny pink shoe.

Held it carefully.

Then quietly cried.

Emily's hands trembled.

Could this really be her father?

Before she could leave unnoticed—

CRASH!

A vase slipped from her hands and shattered across the marble floor.

Richard turned immediately.

His cold blue eyes met hers.

For one endless second...

Neither of them breathed.

"I've... never seen you before," he said quietly.

Emily lowered her head.

"I'm the new maid, sir."

He stared a little longer.

Then whispered almost to himself...

"You remind me of someone."

Emily felt tears burning behind her eyes.

She wanted to tell him everything.

She wanted to scream...

"Dad..."

But she couldn't.

Not yet.

Because someone else had already noticed her.

Standing silently upstairs...

Mrs. Victoria Blackwood.

Richard's younger sister.

The only person in the mansion who had always opposed the search for the missing child.

She watched Emily with narrowed eyes.

Then whispered...

"Impossible..."

She had seen that silver locket before.

Twenty years ago.

On the day the real Emily disappeared.

And at that exact moment...

Victoria made a decision.

May you like

The new maid...

Must never discover the truth.
