chapter 2

The silence in front of the house felt heavier than the funeral Daniela had attended that morning.

Only a few hours had passed since she watched her husband’s coffin disappear into the ground.

But it felt like she had lived an entire lifetime.

In the morning, she was a grieving widow.

By the afternoon, she was a homeless woman according to her in-laws.

And now…

She was standing in front of the same people who had tried to destroy her, holding a document that could change everything.

Rogelio stared at Attorney Renata Lozano with a mixture of anger and confusion.

—You’re making a mistake, lawyer. This house belongs to my son.

Renata didn’t even blink.

—No, Mr. Salgado. That is exactly what you believed.

She opened the folder.

—But belief does not replace a legal document.

Beatriz stepped forward.

Her voice became louder.

—This woman is manipulating you, Daniela. Javier was sick. He wasn’t thinking clearly at the end.

Daniela looked at her.

The same woman who had stolen her wedding ring only hours earlier.

The same woman who watched her grandson get slapped.

For twelve years, Daniela had defended her.

She had called her mother.

But now…

She finally saw her.

—You knew about this, didn’t you? —Daniela whispered.

Beatriz’s expression changed for half a second.

A tiny reaction.

But Renata noticed.

—Interesting —the lawyer said quietly.

Rogelio crossed his arms.

—What are you implying?

Renata looked at him.

—That perhaps you knew Javier had changed his estate plans.

Nobody answered.

And that silence said everything.

Six weeks earlier…

Before cancer took his last breath…

Javier had already discovered the truth.

A truth that broke his heart.

A truth he never told Daniela because he wanted to protect her final months with him.

It started when Javier returned home early from a business meeting.

He had forgotten some documents in his office.

When he entered the house…

He heard voices.

His parents.

Talking.

Laughing.

About him.

About his death.

About what they planned to take.

—Once Javier is gone, everything returns to us —Beatriz had said.

—The house, the company shares, the investments… all of it —Rogelio replied.

Javier stood frozen behind the door.

Unable to move.

Unable to breathe.

Because those weren’t strangers speaking.

Those were his parents.

The people who raised him.

The people he trusted.

Then he heard the sentence that changed everything.

—Daniela won’t know what to do without him. She has never handled business.

Beatriz laughed.

—She’ll leave quietly. Women like her always do.

Javier walked away without making a sound.

But something inside him died that day.

Not from cancer.

From betrayal.

Back in the present…

Renata took out another document.

—Javier created a family trust two months before his death.

Daniela looked confused.

—But why didn’t he tell me?

Renata’s expression softened.

—Because he knew you would confront them.

She looked toward Rogelio and Beatriz.

—And he knew exactly what they were capable of.

Mateo, still holding a tissue against his bleeding lip, stepped closer.

—My dad knew they would do this?

Renata nodded.

—Your father knew his parents had changed.

Sofía hugged Daniela’s arm.

—Did Dad know they were going to hurt us?

Daniela’s eyes filled with tears.

Renata looked at the little girl.

—Your father hoped he was wrong.

A painful silence followed.

Because everyone understood.

Javier wasn’t wrong.

Rogelio suddenly stepped forward.

—Enough.

His voice was aggressive.

—You cannot come here and accuse us in front of everyone.

He pointed at Daniela.

—She is emotional. She just lost her husband. She doesn’t understand legal matters.

Daniela looked at him.

And for the first time…

She wasn’t the frightened woman from the afternoon.

She was Javier’s wife.

The mother of his children.

—You’re right about one thing.

Rogelio smiled, thinking he had won.

Then Daniela continued:

—I am emotional.

She looked at Mateo.

At Sofía.

Then back at him.

—Because I spent twelve years believing you loved us.

The smile disappeared.

Renata opened the second envelope.

—Now we need to go to the safe.

Beatriz’s face suddenly changed.

—What safe?

Nobody answered.

But Daniela noticed.

Her mother-in-law had reacted too quickly.

Too nervously.

Renata saw it too.

—The safe your son created after discovering certain financial irregularities.

Rogelio’s jaw tightened.

—What irregularities?

The lawyer looked directly at him.

—The kind that explain why Javier removed both of you from every inheritance document.

For the first time…

Rogelio looked afraid.

Inside the house, Daniela walked through the rooms she had been forced to leave only hours before.

Everything looked the same.

The family photos.

The children's drawings.

Javier’s favorite chair.

But now every corner carried a different memory.

Renata followed her to Javier’s office.

Behind a painting of their wedding photo was a small metal box.

Daniela touched it.

Her fingers trembled.

—He never told me this was here.

Renata nodded.

—Because he wanted you to find it only when you needed protection.

The notary opened the box.

Inside were:

  • Bank records.

  • Copies of contracts.

  • Private recordings.

  • A handwritten letter.

Daniela picked up the letter first.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Her husband.

Her Javier.

She opened it.

"Dani,

If you are reading this, I am no longer beside you.

I wish I could have protected you myself.

But there is something you deserve to know.

My parents did not suddenly become cruel after my death.

They planned this while I was still alive.

And the worst part is…

They were not only trying to take my money.

They were trying to take something much more valuable.

Our children.

Daniela stopped.

Her heart began racing.

She continued reading.

"Mateo is not only my son.

He is the future owner of something my grandfather left behind.

Something worth millions.

Something my parents have been trying to control for years.

They never cared about me.

They cared about what my bloodline could give them.

Protect our children.

Especially Mateo.

Because they will come after him next."

Daniela dropped the letter.

—No…

Mateo looked at her.

—Mom?

She looked terrified.

Because suddenly the attack that afternoon made sense.

The slap.

The humiliation.

Throwing them out.

It wasn’t about the house.

It was about something else.

Something Javier had hidden.

Something connected to their son.

Then suddenly…

The lights went out.

The entire house went dark.

Everyone froze.

A second later…

A loud sound came from outside.

The front door slammed open.

One of the police officers reached for his radio.

—Who are you?

A man’s voice answered from the darkness.

Calm.

Cold.

—I’m here for the Salgado inheritance.

Daniela’s blood ran cold.

Because she recognized that voice.

She had heard it once before.

At Javier’s hospital room.

The night before he died.

The stranger who whispered something to her husband.

The stranger Javier refused to explain.

The man stepped into the light.

And when Daniela saw his face…

She felt the world collapse.

Because he looked exactly like Javier.

And he said:

—Daniela Salgado…

May you like

—You need to know the truth about who your husband really was.

TO BE CONTINUED…
