CHAPTER 5 — THE FINAL TRUTH JAVIER TOOK TO HIS GRAVE

The words on the screen burned into Daniela’s mind.

"The Salgado family is built on a lie."

She read them again.

And again.

But no matter how many times she looked at the sentence, it didn’t become easier.

Javier.

Her Javier.

The man who always told her:

"A family is built with love, not with a last name."

Had spent his final days searching for the truth about his own identity.

And he had died before revealing it.

Daniela pressed her hand against her chest.

The pain was different now.

Before, she had lost her husband to cancer.

Now…

She was discovering she had lost him while he was carrying a secret that could change everything.

Renata closed the laptop.

—There is something you need to understand.

Daniela looked at her.

—What?

The lawyer spoke carefully.

—Javier didn’t discover this recently.

She paused.

—He discovered it almost twelve years ago.

Daniela froze.

Twelve years.

The exact amount of time they had been married.

—That’s impossible.

Renata looked at her sadly.

—It happened shortly after your wedding.

Daniela felt her stomach tighten.

—Why didn’t he tell me?

Adrian answered quietly.

—Because he was afraid you would leave.

She looked at him.

—Leave him?

Adrian nodded.

—Javier spent his entire life believing that if people knew the truth about him, they would see him differently.

Daniela closed her eyes.

Because she knew that wasn’t true.

She would never have abandoned him.

Never.

Years earlier…

Before Daniela met Javier, the Salgado family was considered one of the most respected families in Guadalajara.

Money.

Status.

Influence.

But behind the expensive houses and family celebrations…

There were secrets.

Rogelio Salgado had built his reputation on one thing:

Control.

He controlled his business.

He controlled his family.

And most importantly…

He controlled information.

Because he knew one truth:

A powerful family could survive scandals.

But it could not survive the truth.

The first secret was Adrian.

The son he abandoned.

But there was another.

One that even Javier had struggled to accept.

When Javier was 31 years old, he discovered old documents hidden inside his father’s private office.

Birth certificates.

Medical records.

Letters.

And one document that made his entire world collapse.

His birth certificate had been altered.

His original records were missing.

Someone had changed his identity.

Someone had erased his past.

And the person who had done it…

Was his own father.

Back in Renata’s office…

Daniela looked at Adrian.

—You knew all this?

Adrian nodded.

—Javier told me everything.

—Why?

Adrian looked at the floor.

—Because he needed someone to trust.

He smiled sadly.

—He said I was the only person in the family who understood what it felt like to have your identity stolen.

Daniela felt tears forming.

Because suddenly she understood.

Javier wasn’t just helping Adrian.

He saw himself in him.

Both were victims of the same man.

Rogelio.

Then Renata placed another folder on the table.

—This is the last piece.

Daniela hesitated.

—What is it?

—The DNA result.

Nobody spoke.

Renata opened it.

The room became completely silent.

She read the first line.

Then looked at Daniela.

—Javier was right to question everything.

Daniela grabbed the paper.

Her eyes moved quickly.

And then…

She stopped.

Her hands began shaking.

Because the result said:

"JAVIER SALGADO DOES NOT HAVE A BIOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH ROGELIO SALGADO."

Mateo stared.

—What?

Sofía looked confused.

—Does that mean Grandpa wasn’t Dad’s father?

Nobody answered immediately.

Because the truth was even bigger.

Renata continued:

—But there is more.

She turned the page.

The second result appeared.

"MATERNAL DNA MATCH CONFIRMED."

Daniela frowned.

—His mother?

Renata nodded.

—Beatriz was Javier’s biological mother.

Everyone went silent.

Javier was not Rogelio’s son.

But he was Beatriz’s.

Which meant…

Rogelio had raised a child that was not his.

And spent decades hiding it.

Then suddenly…

Daniela remembered something.

Something Beatriz had said years ago.

During a family dinner.

She had been drinking wine.

Laughing.

And she told Javier:

"You should be grateful your father accepted you."

At the time, everyone thought it was a strange joke.

But now…

It had a completely different meaning.

Renata continued.

—Javier discovered that Rogelio knew the truth.

—For years?

—Yes.

—Then why did he keep Javier?

Adrian answered:

—Because Javier was valuable.

Everyone looked at him.

—What do you mean?

Adrian looked at Daniela.

—Rogelio knew Javier inherited something from his biological family.

Something much bigger than the Salgado company.

A hidden inheritance.

Daniela whispered:

—That’s why they wanted Mateo.

Adrian nodded.

—Exactly.

The room became silent.

Everything connected.

The house.

The company shares.

The attacks.

The obsession with Mateo.

It was never about Javier’s money.

It was about Javier’s bloodline.

A bloodline Rogelio had spent years trying to control.

Then Renata’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

—What happened?

She listened.

Then slowly stood up.

—That’s impossible.

Daniela immediately became nervous.

—What is it?

Renata looked at everyone.

—The second safe was opened.

Adrian frowned.

—What second safe?

Renata looked toward Daniela.

—The one Javier never told anyone about.

A chill went through the room.

—Who opened it?

Renata looked at the message on her phone.

Her voice became quiet.

—Someone using Daniela’s authorization.

Daniela froze.

—But I never opened anything.

Renata nodded.

—I know.

A pause.

—Which means someone has access to your identity.

Everyone became silent.

Then Mateo whispered:

—Mom…

Daniela looked at him.

—What?

He pointed toward the window.

Outside the office…

A shadow moved.

Someone was watching them.

And then Daniela’s phone received a message from an unknown number.

Only six words.

Six words that made her blood run cold.

"Stop searching, or your son disappears."

Daniela dropped the phone.

Because she finally understood.

The people who destroyed Javier’s life…

Were still fighting.

And now…

May you like

They were coming after his children.

TO BE CONTINUED…
