CHAPTER 3 — THE STRANGER WHO KNEW JAVIER’S BIGGEST SECRET

The entire room went silent.
Not the kind of silence that comes from peace.
The kind that comes before a storm.
Daniela stood frozen beside Javier’s desk, still holding the letter that had just destroyed everything she believed about her husband’s final days.
Her heart was pounding.
Her hands were shaking.
Because the man standing in front of her…
The man who had entered the house claiming to know the truth about Javier…
Looked at her with eyes that felt strangely familiar.
Eyes that reminded her of the man she had buried that morning.
—Who are you? —Daniela whispered.
The stranger didn’t answer immediately.
He looked around the room.
At the family photographs.
At Javier’s books.
At the chair where Javier used to sit every night working late.
Then he looked back at Daniela.
—I’m Adrian Salgado.
The name meant nothing to her.
But the reaction from Rogelio and Beatriz was immediate.
Beatriz’s face lost all color.
Rogelio stepped backward.
Only a few centimeters.
But Daniela noticed.
Because for the first time that day…
Her in-laws looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
—No… —Beatriz whispered.
Adrian looked at her.
—You remember me.
Nobody moved.
Daniela turned slowly toward her mother-in-law.
—You know him?
Beatriz looked away.
That was the answer.
Renata immediately stepped between Daniela and the stranger.
—Nobody moves until we understand what is happening.
Adrian gave a small smile.
—Good.
He looked at the lawyer.
—That is exactly why Javier trusted you.
Renata narrowed her eyes.
—You knew Javier?
Adrian nodded.
—For many years.
Daniela felt a strange pain in her chest.
How many secrets had Javier carried alone?
How many things had he hidden to protect her?
—My husband never mentioned you.
Adrian looked at her sadly.
—I know.
A pause.
—Because he was protecting you from the truth.
Those words hurt more than she expected.
Because Daniela suddenly wondered…
Was Javier’s love for her mixed with lies?
Rogelio finally found his voice.
—This man is nobody.
He pointed at Adrian.
—He is trying to take advantage of our family’s tragedy.
Adrian laughed quietly.
A cold laugh.
—Your family?
He looked at Rogelio.
—You lost the right to say that years ago.
Rogelio’s face became furious.
—Watch your mouth.
Adrian stepped closer.
—Or what?
The room became tense.
—You’ll hit another child?
Mateo immediately looked up.
Rogelio looked away.
Because everyone remembered.
The slap.
The blood.
The moment that started everything.
Adrian walked toward the safe.
He placed a small key on the table.
Daniela stared at it.
—Where did you get that?
Adrian looked at her.
—Javier gave it to me.
Her breathing stopped.
—When?
Adrian’s eyes became darker.
—Three days before he died.
Daniela felt like the floor moved beneath her.
Three days.
She remembered those days.
Javier could barely walk.
He spent most of his time sleeping.
She thought they were his final peaceful moments.
But he was making plans.
Preparing.
Fighting.
Even while dying.
Adrian opened the safe.
Inside was another folder.
But this one was different.
It was marked:
"ONLY FOR DANIELA AND MY CHILDREN."
Daniela reached for it.
But before she could open it…
Rogelio shouted:
—You have no right!
Everyone turned.
Rogelio’s face was red.
—That belongs to my son.
Renata looked at him.
—Actually, Mr. Salgado, according to the trust documents, everything inside this safe belongs to Daniela and her children.
Rogelio clenched his fists.
—You think some papers can stop me?
The police officer stepped forward.
—You should choose your next words carefully.
For the first time…
Rogelio became quiet.
Daniela opened the folder.
The first document was a DNA report.
Her eyes immediately stopped.
She read the name.
Then she looked at Adrian.
Then back at the paper.
Her hands began trembling.
—No…
Mateo noticed.
—Mom, what is it?
Daniela couldn’t answer.
Because the document contained a truth that Javier had hidden for twelve years.
A truth that changed the meaning of family forever.
The report said:
"PATERNITY CONFIRMATION: JAVIER SALGADO IS NOT THE BIOLOGICAL FATHER OF ADRIAN SALGADO."
Daniela looked up.
Confused.
Shocked.
—What does this mean?
Adrian’s face showed pain.
—It means Javier was my brother…
He paused.
—But not by blood.
Everyone stared.
Daniela whispered:
—Then who are you?
Adrian looked toward Rogelio and Beatriz.
And his next words destroyed the entire room.
—I am the son they abandoned.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Beatriz.
Because the secret they had buried for decades…
Had finally returned.
Adrian explained.
Twenty years earlier, before Javier became successful, before he built his company, before he met Daniela…
Rogelio had a first family.
A woman named Elena.
And a son.
Adrian.
But when Elena became seriously ill, Rogelio disappeared.
He left them with nothing.
Years later, Rogelio married Beatriz and created the perfect image of a respected family man.
Javier grew up believing he was an only child.
Until he discovered old documents hidden in his father’s office.
The truth broke him.
Because Javier realized something terrible:
His father had spent his entire life hiding people he considered inconvenient.
Including his own son.
Daniela looked at Adrian.
—Javier knew about you?
Adrian nodded.
—He found me five years ago.
A tear appeared in his eyes.
—Your husband was the first person from that family who treated me like a human being.
Daniela covered her mouth.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The kindness.
The secrets.
The distrust Javier had toward his parents.
—Why didn’t he tell me?
Adrian looked at her.
—Because he was afraid.
—Afraid of what?
Adrian answered:
—That if you knew everything, you would become a target too.
Renata picked up another document.
Her expression changed.
—Wait.
Everyone looked at her.
She read silently for several seconds.
Then she looked at Daniela.
—There’s more.
Daniela felt exhausted.
—More?
Renata nodded slowly.
—Javier didn’t only create a trust.
She turned the page.
—He created a legal investigation.
Rogelio’s face changed.
—What investigation?
Renata looked at him.
—An investigation into years of financial fraud.
Nobody breathed.
—Javier discovered that millions of pesos were secretly transferred from his company accounts.
Daniela looked shocked.
—By who?
Renata didn’t answer immediately.
She looked at the evidence.
Then at Beatriz.
—The transfers were authorized using your mother-in-law’s signature.
Beatriz stepped backward.
—That’s a lie!
Adrian quietly said:
—No.
Everyone turned.
—It’s not a lie.
He pulled out his phone.
—I have the recordings.
The first audio played.
Beatriz’s voice filled the room.
"Once Javier dies, Daniela will have nothing. She doesn't know about the accounts."
Then Rogelio’s voice:
"Mateo is the key. Once he turns 18, we control everything."
Daniela felt sick.
Her own in-laws.
Planning against her.
Against her children.
While she was caring for their dying son.
Mateo grabbed his mother’s hand.
Sofía started crying.
—Mom…
Daniela hugged both children.
But inside her heart…
Something changed.
The woman who left the house that afternoon broken…
Was gone.
Adrian looked at her.
—Javier wanted me to tell you one final thing.
Daniela looked up.
—What?
Adrian took a small envelope from his jacket.
On it was written:
"For Daniela. Read this when you finally know who betrayed us."
Her fingers trembled as she opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
One sentence that made her blood run cold:
"Dani, the people who hurt us today were not the only enemies inside our family… One of them helped create the cancer diagnosis that killed me."
Daniela dropped the letter.
Because now the question was no longer:
"Who wanted her money?"
The question was:
"Who wanted Javier dead?"
And the answer…
May you like
Was closer than she ever imagined.
