CHAPTER 10 — “The Heir Who Refused the Throne”

The ballroom fell silent.

Dominic and Gabriel stood facing each other.

Same height.

Same dark eyes.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Only one difference remained.

Dominic wore an expensive black suit.

Gabriel wore prison scars.

Enzo smiled proudly.

"Two sons."

"One empire."

"One throne."

He walked between them.

"Tonight..."

"...only one leaves as the head of the Valente family."

Every weapon in the room was raised.

Everyone waited.

Enzo handed Dominic a pistol.

Then he handed another to Gabriel.

"One bullet each."

"The survivor inherits everything."

Meline screamed.

"No!"

Dominic never looked away from his brother.

Gabriel quietly lowered his gun.

"I won't do it."

Enzo's smile faded.

"What?"

Gabriel tossed the pistol onto the marble floor.

"For twenty-five years you filled my head with lies."

"You told me my father abandoned me."

"You told me Dominic stole my life."

He looked at Dominic.

"But when I finally met him..."

"...he was the first person who looked at me like family."

Dominic slowly placed his own pistol beside Gabriel's.

"I won't fight my brother."

Enzo's face twisted with rage.

"You weak fools!"

"You would abandon an empire?"

Dominic answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

He walked toward Meline.

"Because an empire built on blood..."

"...isn't worth my family."

Enzo roared and pulled a hidden revolver from inside his coat.

"If I can't have this family..."

"...no one will!"

He fired.

CRACK!

A body stepped between the bullet and Dominic.

Victor Moretti.

The shot struck his chest.

He collapsed into Dominic's arms.

With his final breath, Victor smiled.

"I promised..."

"...I'd protect..."

"...both of Alessandro's sons."

His eyes closed forever.

At that same instant, Enzo's own guards lowered their weapons.

One by one.

Then another.

Finally, the oldest captain stepped forward.

He looked directly at Enzo.

"We followed the Valente family."

"Not a monster."

He turned to Dominic.

"Boss..."

"...your orders?"

Dominic looked around the room.

At Gabriel.

At Meline.

At Victor's body.

Then at the frightened captains who had spent decades living by violence.

He spoke quietly.

"The war ends tonight."

One Year Later

The old Valente estate had been sold.

Its underground vaults had been turned over to federal authorities as part of agreements that dismantled the syndicate's criminal operations.

Dominic resigned from everything except the legitimate shipping company his father had built.

Gabriel never wanted power.

Instead, the two brothers rebuilt their relationship one day at a time.

Carlo became CEO of the company.

Silas headed its cybersecurity division.

And on a warm spring afternoon beside Lake Michigan...

Meline placed a laughing baby girl into Dominic's arms.

"What should we tell her," she asked softly, "when she's old enough to ask how we met?"

Dominic smiled as their daughter wrapped tiny fingers around his thumb.

"The truth."

"That she saved her father..."

"...long before he ever had the chance to save her."

As the sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, Dominic kissed Meline gently.

For the first time in his life, the most feared man in Chicago no longer ruled an empire.

He ruled something far more precious.

May you like

A family.
