CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET HE NEVER TOLD HER

Vanessa laughed.
At first.
Surely this had to be some kind of joke.
"Ethan... stop embarrassing yourself."
But Ethan never smiled.
Instead, he removed his expensive wool coat...
and carefully placed it around his mother's shoulders.
The old woman immediately protested.
"No, sweetheart... you'll be cold."
"I've been warm my whole life because of you."
Those words stunned everyone nearby.
Vanessa suddenly noticed something she had never questioned before.
Ethan never spoke about his family.
Never invited her home.
Never posted childhood photos.
Whenever she asked, he'd simply say,
"My mother prefers privacy."
She had assumed he was ashamed.
She was wrong.
He was protecting her.
Years earlier, Margaret Carter had owned a successful neighborhood bookstore.
When Ethan's father died unexpectedly, debt swallowed everything they had.
Margaret sold her jewelry.
Then her car.
Then her home.
Finally...
she worked three cleaning jobs so Ethan could finish law school.
She skipped meals so he could eat.
She wore secondhand clothes so he could buy textbooks.
Every success Ethan earned...
had been bought with his mother's sacrifice.
Vanessa never wanted to hear those stories.
She only cared about the luxury Ethan had built afterward.
The promotions.
The penthouse.
The vacations.
The expensive restaurants.
Now she finally understood something terrifying.
She had just insulted the woman who had built the man she wanted to marry.
Her voice shook.
"Ethan... I didn't know."
He nodded.
"I know."
"You should forgive me."
"I already forgave you."
Hope returned to Vanessa's face.
Until he finished speaking.
"But forgiveness doesn't mean I trust you."
Silence.
"You didn't insult my mother because you were angry."
He stepped closer.
"You insulted her because you believed she was beneath you."
Every word landed like a hammer.
"I've watched how you treat waiters."
"Drivers."
"Cashiers."
"Janitors."
"And today..."
"My own mother."
Vanessa burst into tears.
"I'll change!"
Ethan looked at her for several long seconds.
Then slowly removed the velvet ring box from his pocket.
The engagement ring she had been waiting months to receive.
Hope exploded inside her.
Instead...
he closed the box.
Placed it back into his coat.
And quietly said,
"I almost asked you to marry me tonight."
Vanessa's knees nearly gave way.
"But a woman who cannot respect the woman who raised me..."
"...will never become part of my family."
She reached desperately for his arm.
He stepped back.
Margaret gently touched her son's shoulder.
"Ethan... don't hate her."
He smiled sadly.
"I don't."
"I just finally see her."
Vanessa watched them walk away together.
She believed she had lost only a relationship.
She had no idea...
May you like
the next morning would cost her far more than love.
