Chapter 3: The Basement No One Was Allowed to Enter

The orphanage director slowly slid the heavy iron gate shut.
CLANG!
The sound echoed through the courtyard like the slam of a prison door.
Outside, the armed guards pounded against the locked entrance.
Inside...
Only Emily, Lily, the director, the gray-suited man, and the mysterious old woman remained.
Emily wrapped an arm around Lily.
"Why did you lock the gate?"
The director sighed.
"Because if they come inside..."
"...none of us will leave alive."
Silence.
The gray-suited man smirked.
"You've hidden the truth for eight years."
The director looked at him with pure hatred.
"And you're the reason dozens of people are dead."
Emily's heart raced.
"What truth?"
Without answering, the director reached beneath his desk and pressed a hidden switch.
A deep rumbling shook the floor.
The old wooden bookshelf slowly slid aside...
Revealing a staircase descending into complete darkness.
Lily stared.
"There's... a basement?"
The director nodded.
"Only one person has ever entered."
Emily swallowed.
"My mother?"
"No."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"You."
Emily frowned.
"I've never been down there."
The director gave a sad smile.
"You just don't remember."
A cold chill crawled up Emily's spine.
The old woman whispered,
"She was only eleven."
The gray-suited man's confidence vanished.
"You promised never to open that room again!"
The director ignored him.
He handed Emily a rusted key.
"Everything begins here."
Emily hesitated.
Then she took Lily's hand.
The sisters descended the narrow staircase together.
Each step grew colder.
Dust filled the air.
The smell of old wood and forgotten secrets surrounded them.
At the bottom...
There was only one room.
One ancient wooden table.
One dusty lamp.
And hundreds...
No.
Thousands...
Of newspaper clippings covering every wall.
Every headline was about the same thing.
THE WHITMORE FAMILY TRAGEDY.
HEIRESS MISSING.
MILLIONAIRE COUPLE FOUND DEAD.
NO SURVIVORS BELIEVED TO REMAIN.
Emily stared in horror.
Then she noticed something impossible.
One newspaper featured a family photograph.
A wealthy husband.
His elegant wife.
A smiling little girl...
Lily.
And standing beside them...
A teenage babysitter.
Emily's breathing stopped.
The babysitter...
Had her face.
Exactly her face.
Same eyes.
Same smile.
Same tiny birthmark near her eyebrow.
"No..."
Emily whispered.
"That's impossible."
The director slowly placed an old photo album onto the table.
"It isn't impossible."
He opened the first page.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Emily Grace Carter
Date of Birth...
Matched hers exactly.
Mother...
Unknown.
Father...
Unknown.
Then he turned the page.
A faded adoption record appeared.
Across the top, someone had stamped one horrifying word in bright red ink.
VOID.
Emily looked up.
"What does this mean?"
The old woman answered with tears in her eyes.
"It means..."
"...you were never supposed to exist."
Suddenly—
BANG!
A massive explosion rocked the building above.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Lily screamed.
Another explosion followed.
The armed men outside had blown open the orphanage gate.
Then came a chilling voice over a loudspeaker.
"Hand over the two girls..."
"...or everyone inside dies."
The director slowly reached into his coat.
Instead of a weapon...
He pulled out an old revolver.
Then handed it to Emily.
"I've protected you for eight years."
His eyes filled with regret.
"Now..."
"It's your turn to protect the truth."
Emily looked down at the gun in trembling hands.
She had never fired a weapon.
But footsteps were already rushing down the basement stairs.
And whoever was coming...
May you like
Already knew exactly where they were.
