Chapter 5: The Brother She Never Knew… Or the Greatest Lie Ever Told

Emily's legs nearly gave out beneath her.
The man in the gray suit stood calmly in the center of the abandoned chapel, moonlight casting long shadows across his face.
"My... brother?" she whispered.
He smiled.
"I've waited nineteen years to hear you say that."
Lily clung tightly to Emily's arm.
"Emily... I don't like him."
The old woman stepped between them.
"Don't listen to him."
"He lies as easily as he breathes."
The man's smile faded.
"You still blame me for what happened?"
"I blame you for everything."
Silence filled the chapel.
Emily looked from one face to another.
"Someone tell me the truth!"
The man reached into his coat.
Slowly.
Carefully.
He pulled out an old family photograph.
It showed a young couple standing beside two small children.
A little boy...
And a baby girl wrapped in a pink blanket.
He handed it to Emily.
"Look closer."
Emily's hands trembled.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.
Nathan – Age 6
Emily – Three Weeks Old
She stared at the baby.
The tiny crescent-shaped birthmark on the baby's wrist was unmistakable.
It was hers.
"No..."
She looked at the man.
"Your name is Nathan?"
He nodded.
"Nathan Whitmore."
"I was six when they took you away."
Emily felt her chest tighten.
"My entire life..."
"I thought I had no family."
Nathan's eyes filled with tears.
"You did."
"You always did."
Before Emily could speak...
The old woman snatched the photograph from her hands.
"It's real."
"But it's not the whole story."
Nathan's expression hardened.
"You promised never to tell her."
"You lost the right to make promises the night you betrayed our family."
Emily's heart pounded.
"Betrayed?"
The old woman slowly turned toward Emily.
"Nathan didn't fail to protect you..."
"He sold your location."
The words hit like a gunshot.
Nathan shouted,
"That's a lie!"
"I was only a child!"
"You accepted the money!"
"I accepted it because they said they'd spare my baby sister!"
"They lied!"
Emily covered her ears.
"Stop!"
"I don't know who to believe!"
Lily quietly tugged on Emily's sleeve.
"There's something behind the picture..."
Emily turned the photograph over again.
Hidden beneath the backing paper was another folded note.
She carefully peeled it open.
Only one sentence was written inside.
'The real enemy carries our family name.'
Everyone in the chapel went silent.
Nathan slowly looked toward the old woman.
The old woman looked back at Nathan.
Neither spoke.
Neither moved.
Then...
A weak voice echoed from outside.
"Emily..."
She recognized it instantly.
Michael.
The orphanage director.
Covered in blood.
Barely able to stand.
He stumbled through the chapel doorway.
"I... couldn't let them stop me..."
Emily rushed to catch him before he collapsed.
"Michael! You're alive!"
He grabbed her wrist with surprising strength.
His voice was barely a whisper.
"You have to leave..."
"They're coming."
Emily looked toward the entrance.
"What do you mean?"
Michael slowly turned his head toward the stained-glass window.
Headlights.
Dozens of them.
The forest outside suddenly glowed white.
One...
Ten...
Twenty...
Then nearly fifty black SUVs surrounded the chapel from every direction.
Hundreds of armed men poured into the woods.
But what terrified Emily wasn't the soldiers.
It was the flag flying on the lead vehicle.
A silver crest.
The same Whitmore family emblem engraved on Lily's locket.
Nathan's face turned pale.
Michael closed his eyes.
"They're here..."
Emily whispered,
"Who are they?"
Michael forced out one final sentence before losing consciousness.
"They're not coming for Lily..."
His eyes opened one last time.
"They're coming for you."
Outside...
A loudspeaker crackled to life.
"Emily Whitmore..."
"You have sixty seconds to surrender."
May you like
"...or your brother dies first."
