CHAPTER 4 — The Grandfather's Greatest Lie

"No..."

Isabella's voice barely escaped her lips.

She stared at the frozen television screen where her father's final words still echoed inside her mind.

DON'T TRUST EMILIO.

The room fell into complete silence.

Every pair of eyes slowly turned toward the old man in the wheelchair.

Emilio looked devastated.

His hands trembled uncontrollably.

"I don't understand," he whispered.

"I swear... I don't understand."

Victor suddenly laughed.

Not loudly.

Just enough to make everyone uncomfortable.

"I warned you," he said, pressing a towel against his bleeding shoulder.

"My father has fooled all of you."

"No!" Isabella shouted.

"He spent seventeen years looking for me."

Victor slowly nodded.

"Exactly."

"And have you ever asked yourself why?"

The storm outside intensified.

Thunder shook the mansion.

The emergency lights flickered again.

No one noticed Rafael quietly backing toward the hallway.

No one except Lucía.

She watched him leave.

But said nothing.

Her attention remained fixed on Emilio.

For the first time in years...

She wasn't afraid of her father.

She was afraid of what he might finally reveal.

Victor slowly walked toward Emilio.

"You've always played the victim."

"You let everyone believe we stole your company."

"You let everyone believe we drugged you."

"But tell them the truth."

Emilio lowered his head.

"There are things..."

"...I hoped would die with me."

Victor's smile widened.

"There it is."

The confession had begun.

Forty years earlier...

Emilio Navarro had been nothing more than a brilliant engineer with impossible dreams.

He built bridges.

Hospitals.

Schools.

Entire neighborhoods.

People called him "the honest businessman."

But honesty doesn't build billion-dollar empires.

One night...

A stranger arrived at his office carrying a black leather briefcase.

He introduced himself simply as...

"Mr. Rowan."

No business card.

No company name.

Only one offer.

"We'll make you the richest builder in the country."

"In return..."

"You'll never ask where the money comes from."

Emilio refused.

Three days later...

His first construction project burned to the ground.

One worker died.

The banks canceled every loan.

His investors disappeared.

Within a month...

His company was bankrupt.

Then Mr. Rowan returned.

This time Emilio accepted.

It was the biggest mistake of his life.

"The Covenant funded everything," Emilio admitted.

"They opened every door."

"They bribed every official."

"They eliminated every competitor."

Victor interrupted.

"And you enjoyed every minute."

"No!"

"I hated what we became."

"But by then..."

"There was no escape."

The old man's voice cracked.

"They owned us."

Isabella stepped closer.

"So my parents discovered the truth."

Emilio nodded.

"Your father wanted to expose everything."

"He believed justice still existed."

"It didn't."

"He was already marked for death."

Tears filled Emilio's eyes.

"I begged him to run."

"He refused."

"He said he would never abandon you."

Lucía suddenly shouted,

"That's enough!"

Everyone looked at her.

Her breathing had become frantic.

"You keep pretending you're innocent!"

"You signed every contract!"

"You approved every payment!"

"You knew children disappeared!"

"You knew witnesses vanished!"

"You knew entire families were erased!"

The room froze.

Lucía realized what she had just admitted.

Too late.

The doctor stared at her in horror.

"You knew?"

Lucía covered her mouth.

Victor closed his eyes.

Rafael whispered,

"Oh God..."

Before anyone could speak again...

A loud crash echoed from the basement.

Metal scraping against concrete.

Then...

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming upward.

One...

Step...

At...

A...

Time.

Everyone turned toward the hallway leading to the underground wine cellar.

The security guard standing near the stairs raised his pistol.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

Another step.

Then another.

The guard aimed.

"Come out!"

Silence.

Suddenly...

A blood-covered hand appeared on the staircase railing.

The nurse screamed.

The doctor pulled Isabella behind him.

The figure slowly climbed into view.

His clothes were torn.

His beard was gray.

His wrists were bleeding from broken restraints.

He looked exhausted.

But alive.

Very much alive.

Isabella couldn't breathe.

"Dad..."

Mateo Navarro collapsed onto the marble floor.

Emilio burst into tears.

"My son..."

The entire room rushed forward.

Except Victor.

Victor quietly reached inside his jacket.

He wasn't reaching for a phone.

He was reaching for a pistol.

Rafael saw it first.

"Victor!"

Too late.

Victor pointed the weapon directly at Mateo.

"You should've stayed dead."

The gunshot exploded through the hall.

But Victor never pulled the trigger.

A second shot rang out from somewhere above.

Victor's pistol flew from his hand.

Blood poured from his wrist.

Everyone looked toward the grand staircase.

Standing there...

Dressed in a black suit...

Holding a suppressed handgun...

Was an elegant woman with silver hair tied into a perfect bun.

A single white orchid was pinned to her lapel.

She smiled calmly.

"So..."

"The Navarro family has finally reunited."

Mateo's face turned pale.

"No..."

"Not her..."

The woman descended the staircase without hurry.

Every guard lowered their weapons.

Not because they were ordered to.

Because they recognized her.

She stopped in front of Isabella.

Studied her face for several long seconds.

Then smiled warmly.

"You look exactly like your mother."

Isabella clenched her fists.

"Who are you?"

The woman extended one gloved hand.

"My name is Eleanor Rowan."

"My father created The Covenant."

"I merely perfected it."

The room fell silent.

Eleanor glanced toward Emilio.

"You disappointed us."

Then toward Victor.

"You failed us."

Finally...

She looked directly into Isabella's eyes.

"But you..."

Her smile grew even colder.

"You belong to us."

Isabella frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Eleanor slowly removed a sealed envelope from her handbag.

She handed it to Isabella.

Inside...

There was a birth certificate.

Not Isabella's.

Another little girl's.

Same birthday.

Same hospital.

Same mother.

Different father.

Attached was a DNA report bearing an official government seal.

Across the front, stamped in red ink, were six devastating words:

ISABELLA NAVARRO — IDENTITY REPLACED AT BIRTH.

The blood drained from Isabella's face.

She looked at Mateo.

Then at Emilio.

Then back at the DNA report.

"No..."

"This isn't possible."

Eleanor smiled.

"Oh, my dear..."

"Nothing about your life has ever been real."

And before anyone could recover from the shock...

The mansion's front doors exploded inward.

More than twenty armed men in black tactical gear stormed inside.

Their leader removed his helmet.

Looked directly at Isabella.

And said the words that changed everything once again.

"Miss Isabella..."

May you like

"We're not here to arrest you."

"We're here to take you home."
