CHAPTER 5 — The Girl They Raised Was Never the One They Wanted

The shattered front doors swung back and forth in the wind.
Twenty armed men flooded into the mansion in perfect formation.
Not a single shot was fired.
Not because they weren't prepared.
Because nobody dared to resist.
Every guard inside the Navarro estate quietly lowered their weapons.
They recognized the insignia stitched onto the newcomers' uniforms.
A silver phoenix wrapped around a white orchid.
The symbol everyone feared...
But almost no one had ever seen.
The Covenant.
The man leading the team removed his tactical helmet.
He was tall, clean-shaven, and carried himself with military precision.
A thin scar crossed his left eyebrow.
His expression remained calm as his eyes settled on Isabella.
He gave a respectful nod.
"Miss Isabella."
"We've been looking for you for a very long time."
Isabella stepped backward.
"I don't know you."
"No."
"But I knew your mother."
Mateo struggled to stand.
"Stay away from my daughter!"
The commander looked at him with genuine sadness.
"I tried to save both of you seventeen years ago."
Mateo froze.
"You..."
The commander nodded.
"My name is Daniel Cross."
"I was the officer assigned to eliminate your family."
Silence consumed the room.
Victor whispered,
"Impossible..."
Daniel looked at him.
"You remember me."
Victor's face turned pale.
"You disappeared after the explosion."
"I refused the order."
Eleanor Rowan smiled as though she were watching a theater performance.
"Daniel was always sentimental."
"He confused loyalty with morality."
Daniel ignored her.
Instead, he looked at Isabella.
"The DNA report is real."
"But it doesn't tell the whole story."
Isabella tightened her grip on the document.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel slowly removed another sealed folder from his vest.
"This is the complete report."
He handed it to her.
The first page carried the logo of a private genetic laboratory.
The second page contained photographs from a maternity ward dated twenty-six years earlier.
The third page made Isabella's knees weaken.
There were two newborn girls.
Born only seven minutes apart.
One wore a pink identification bracelet.
The other wore a blue one.
Someone had switched the bracelets.
Deliberately.
Eleanor folded her arms.
"We replace children all the time."
"It's easier to control the future when you choose who grows up in which family."
The nurse stared at her in horror.
"You switched babies?"
Eleanor smiled.
"Thousands."
The doctor felt sick.
"Why?"
"Because bloodlines create power."
"Power creates wealth."
"And wealth controls nations."
She said it as casually as discussing the weather.
Isabella looked toward Mateo.
"So..."
"I'm not your daughter?"
Mateo slowly approached her.
His eyes overflowed with tears.
"I don't care what that report says."
"I carried you."
"I taught you to ride a bicycle."
"I stayed awake every night when you had nightmares."
"I watched you take your first steps."
He gently placed one hand on her shoulder.
"You became my daughter the day I held you."
"You always will be."
Isabella burst into tears.
For the first time since returning to the mansion...
She hugged him.
The room fell silent.
Even Eleanor watched without interrupting.
For a brief moment...
She almost looked human.
Then Emilio spoke.
"There was another baby."
Everyone turned toward him.
His voice was barely audible.
"I remember..."
"The maternity ward."
"There was another little girl."
"The nurses said she stopped breathing."
Eleanor smiled again.
"She didn't."
Emilio looked at her in disbelief.
"What?"
"The second baby survived."
The old man's heart pounded.
"Where is she?"
Eleanor slowly walked toward the fireplace.
"Wouldn't you like to know?"
Daniel interrupted.
"We found evidence."
He opened another file.
Inside were dozens of photographs.
One image caught everyone's attention.
A young woman.
About twenty-six years old.
Dark blonde hair.
Green eyes.
Wearing a white orchid pendant around her neck.
Behind the photograph someone had written:
PROJECT HEIR 27
Daniel looked at Isabella.
"This woman is the biological daughter of Mateo Navarro."
"And she's been raised by The Covenant since birth."
The room became completely silent.
Mateo could barely breathe.
"My daughter..."
"She's alive?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"As far as we know."
"But she doesn't know who she really is."
Lucía suddenly began laughing.
Everyone stared at her.
The laughter became louder.
Almost hysterical.
"You still don't understand."
Victor shouted,
"Lucía!"
She ignored him.
"You think Isabella is the prize?"
"No."
"She's only the distraction."
Daniel frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Lucía wiped tears from her face.
"The Covenant never wanted the Navarro fortune."
"They wanted something hidden beneath it."
Eleanor's smile disappeared.
For the first time...
She looked concerned.
Lucía noticed.
"Oh..."
"I finally surprised you."
Rafael slowly looked toward his sister.
"You know where it is."
"I helped hide it."
Victor turned violently.
"What did you say?"
"I was there."
"The night Father buried it."
Emilio's eyes widened.
"No..."
"You promised..."
"I know."
Rafael nodded.
"But too many people have died."
"I'm done protecting this family."
He looked directly at Isabella.
"There's a bunker beneath the old chapel on the western side of the estate."
"It isn't full of money."
"It isn't gold."
"It isn't company records."
"It's something much worse."
Daniel stepped forward.
"What?"
Rafael swallowed hard.
"A list."
"What kind of list?"
"The names..."
"...of every child The Covenant has ever stolen."
The room exploded into chaos.
The doctor gasped.
The nurse burst into tears.
Mateo closed his eyes.
Eleanor's calm expression finally cracked.
For the first time in decades...
She looked afraid.
Without warning...
An alarm echoed throughout the mansion.
Not from the security system.
From Eleanor's wristwatch.
She looked down.
Her face lost all color.
"No..."
Daniel noticed immediately.
"What happened?"
She whispered only two words.
"He's awake."
Nobody understood.
Except Emilio.
His entire body began shaking.
"It can't be..."
Mateo stared at his father.
"Who?"
Emilio looked toward the ceiling as though remembering a nightmare he had spent decades trying to forget.
"The Founder."
Daniel's face turned white.
"I thought he died thirty years ago."
Eleanor slowly shook her head.
"No."
"He was never dead."
"He was waiting."
The lights throughout the mansion suddenly shut off once again.
Every phone lost signal.
Every electronic device died.
Then an old man's voice echoed through hidden speakers installed inside the walls.
Calm.
Gentle.
Almost grandfatherly.
"Good evening..."
"My children."
Isabella felt a chill run down her spine.
The voice continued.
"I've waited twenty-six years to finally meet..."
"...my granddaughter."
The room froze.
Isabella's heart stopped.
She looked at Mateo.
Then at Emilio.
Neither of them spoke.
Because deep inside...
They both realized the impossible.
The Founder wasn't talking about the biological daughter raised by The Covenant.
He was looking for Isabella.
May you like
And somehow...
He believed she belonged to him.
