CHAPTER 2 — The Lost Heiress Returns

The silence shattered into hundreds of overlapping voices.

"What did he just say?"

"Lady Amelia?"

"That's impossible!"

Victoria laughed first.

Then louder.

"This is ridiculous."

"She's a waitress from the east side."

Edmund slowly turned toward the crowd.

His expression transformed from gentle servant...

...into the authority of a man who had protected one of America's most powerful families for decades.

"You are mistaken."

He removed a worn leather folder from inside his jacket.

Yellowed photographs.

Hospital records.

Newspaper clippings.

DNA reports.

Every document had been preserved for twenty-two years.

"The Sterling family's only granddaughter disappeared during a hospital evacuation after a devastating fire."

"Three nurses died protecting the infants."

"The baby was never found."

Everyone listened without breathing.

Edmund held up an old photograph.

A newborn baby wearing the exact silver pendant now resting against Emily's chest.

"The pendant contains the Sterling family crest."

He opened it carefully.

Inside...

Half of an ancient family seal.

Emily slowly reached into her handbag.

"My adoptive grandmother told me never to lose this."

She revealed a tiny silver coin she'd carried since childhood.

Edmund's hands trembled violently.

The two pieces fit together perfectly.

CLICK.

The ballroom gasped.

Victoria stepped backward.

Richard Ashcroft suddenly stopped smiling.

Because he recognized the seal.

Twenty-two years ago...

His company had quietly acquired several Sterling properties after the family tragedy.

Properties worth billions today.

If Amelia Sterling had survived...

Every one of those transactions could be challenged.

Every fortune built afterward could collapse.

Edmund looked directly at Richard.

"You knew."

Richard's face turned pale.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

But Edmund continued.

"I warned you years ago."

"If Lady Amelia ever returned..."

"The truth would return with her."

Emily stared at everyone.

"I don't understand."

"I thought my parents abandoned me."

Edmund gently shook his head.

"They didn't."

"They died searching for you."

The words shattered her heart.

For the first time in her life...

Emily realized she had never been unwanted.

May you like

She had been stolen from the people who loved her most.

And someone inside that very ballroom knew exactly how it happened.
