"Hurry up, Mrs. Clara! My mother shouldn't have to wait for her food!"
Ramiro's voice echoed through the kitchen just as Teresa walked in through the back patio door. She froze, still holding the grocery bag on her arm as an icy feeling crept up her chest.
Her 72-year-old mother, Clara, stood at the kitchen sink with trembling hands submerged in cold water. Only ten days earlier, she had been discharged from the hospital after a dangerous spike in blood pressure. Yet there she was, scrubbing greasy pots and pans.
At the head of the dining table, Doña Matilde, Teresa's mother-in-law, calmly ate a bowl of birria with freshly warmed tortillas while scrolling through videos on her phone.
"I'm coming, Ramiro," Clara murmured. "I just need to finish this dish."
He snatched the pot from her hands.
"You didn't come here on vacation. My mother wants more broth."
Clara lowered her head.
"I'm sorry, son."
That simple apology hurt Teresa more than any insult ever could.
She had been married to Ramiro for 31 years.
For 31 years, she had swallowed insults, silent treatment, and humiliation to avoid "breaking up the family."
When Doña Matilde underwent hip surgery, Ramiro insisted she move into their home in Guadalajara.
Teresa gave her the largest bedroom, drove her to medical appointments, prepared special meals, and endured constant criticism—even over the way she folded towels.
"She's an elderly woman. Stop making such a big deal out of everything," Ramiro would always say.
But when Clara became ill and needed a place to stay for a few weeks, Ramiro claimed there wasn't enough room.
Teresa brought her mother home anyway and set up a bed beside the laundry room.
Doña Matilde had a private bathroom.
Clara slept next to the clothes dryer.
That afternoon, Teresa didn't yell.
She quietly turned off the faucet, dried her mother's hands, and helped her lie down to rest.
"Mom... why did you let them treat you like that?"
Clara squeezed her daughter's hand.
"I don't want you to have problems because of me. Tomorrow I'll go back to my apartment."
"You're not going anywhere."
Teresa returned to the kitchen, served another bowl of broth, and cleared the dishes without showing any emotion.
Ramiro smiled, convinced that he had won once again.
When everyone settled in to watch television, Teresa went into her bedroom and pulled out a folder hidden behind a stack of blankets.
Inside were screenshots of text messages between Ramiro and a woman named Lorena, hotel receipts from Chapala, suspicious bank transfers, and the deed to a piece of land near Sayulita that Teresa had inherited exclusively from her late father.
A real estate developer had just offered her 4,800,000 pesos for the property.
Teresa called the real estate agent.
"I accept."
Then she dialed Julia Cárdenas, an attorney her sister had recommended.
"I need to file for divorce without giving my husband any chance to hide his assets."
Julia asked her to send photos of her bank statements.
As Teresa snapped another picture, she zoomed in on a transfer for 640,000 pesos.
That's when she noticed a banking document she had never carefully examined before.
It was an application for a loan secured by their house.
At the bottom...
Her name appeared.
Beneath it was a signature...
Almost identical to her own.
Teresa felt the air leave her lungs.
Ramiro didn't just have another woman.
He had forged her signature, drained their savings, and set everything in motion to throw her out of her own home.
