Chapter 2 - The Billionaire’s ProposalThe black sedan drifted smoothly through downtown traffic, the heavy hum of the luxury engine contrasting sharply with the chaotic storm brewing inside Lena’s mind. She sat in the back seat beside Eleanor, while Julian sat across from them on the jump seat, his expression unreadable.

"I can't go to a fancy restaurant like this," Lena protested, looking down at her patched coat and worn boots. "Look at me. I belong at the bus terminal kiosk, not wherever you're taking me."

Eleanor patted Lena’s hand warmly. "My dear, after today, you belong wherever you choose to be. Julian, tell her."

Julian leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. "Grandmother is right. But more importantly, Lena, I need to make something clear. My family doesn't forget debts of honor. You protected my grandmother when her own town treated her like trash."

"I did what anyone decent would do," Lena insisted.

"No," Julian said firmly. "Most people looked through her glass doors and pretended not to see. You looked right at her and cared. I respect that more than anything."

The car pulled up to a towering glass skyscraper in the financial district—Hale Global Enterprises. The doorman rushed to open the door, shielding Lena from the light afternoon mist.

Instead of a boardroom, Julian led them to his private penthouse office on the top floor. The panoramic view of Charlotte was breathtaking, a sprawling vista of glass and steel under a bruised, gray sky.

Julian walked over to his mahogany desk, picked up a tablet, and tapped a few screens before turning it toward Lena.

"What is this?" Lena asked, staring at the document displayed.

"An investment proposal," Julian said smoothly. "Three million dollars in seed capital to launch your own fashion label. A dedicated manufacturing partnership, boutique storefront space on the ground floor of this very building, and complete creative control."

Lena stepped back as if the tablet were on fire. "Are you out of your mind? I sell handmade dresses at a weekend flea market! I don't know the first thing about running a corporate brand!"

"You know how to design," Julian countered, stepping closer. "You know quality. And you have an eye that can spot talent where others only see poverty. I have the business infrastructure, the supply chains, and the capital. We partner. Fifty-fifty."

Eleanor smiled knowingly from her armchair, sipping a cup of chamomile tea brought in by an assistant. "Take it, child. Julian is stubborn. Once he sets his mind to a project—or a person—he doesn't stop."

Lena looked from Eleanor to Julian, her heart pounding against her ribs. This wasn't just a business offer; it was a lifeline. It meant paying off her back rent, saving her apartment, and finally escaping the grinding cycle of desperation that had defined her entire adult life.

"Why?" Lena whispered, her voice cracking slightly. "Why do this for a complete stranger you met twenty minutes ago?"

Julian’s gaze softened just a fraction, a shadow crossing his eyes. "Because in my world, people lie to my face every single day while wearing expensive suits. You gave away your last meal to an old woman in a faded coat. I know character when I see it, Lena. Do we have a deal?"

Lena swallowed hard, looked at the digital contract, and slowly reached out. "We have a deal."
