Chapter 5 - The Velvet TrapTwo weeks later, the tension in the office had dissolved into a whirlwind of frantic preparations. The grand unveiling of The Heritage Line was only forty-eight hours away. Invitations had gone out to elite fashion critics, celebrities, and society elites across the East Coast.

Lena stood backstage in the grand ballroom of the Hale Plaza Hotel, adjusting the fit of an ivory silk gown on her lead model. The lights were dazzling, the runway gleamed like polished obsidian, and the air smelled of expensive perfume and nervous anticipation.
Julian walked backstage, wearing a sleek tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders. He looked every bit the billionaire titan, yet his eyes searched the room until they landed on Lena.
"You look exhausted," Julian said softly, stepping close enough that Lena could feel the warmth radiating from him.
"It's good exhaustion," Lena smiled tiredly, wiping a stray smudge of charcoal from her cheek. "I still can't believe this is real. Tomorrow night, the whole world sees my work."
Julian raised his hand, his thumb gently brushing the smudge of charcoal from her cheek. His touch lingered for a fraction of a second too long, sending a sudden electric shiver down Lena’s spine.
"You earned every bit of this, Lena," Julian murmured, his eyes locking onto hers. "You survived on your own strength. Never forget that."
Before Lena could answer, her phone buzzed sharply on the makeup table.
She glanced down. It was an unknown number, displaying a local text message:
Check your email, Lena. Don't let the white knight blind you. The contract you signed wasn't a partnership. It was a cage.
Lena’s breath caught. She unlocked her phone with trembling fingers and tapped open her email inbox. A single PDF document sat at the top, sent from an encrypted address.
"What is it?" Julian asked, noticing the sudden drain of color from her face.
"Nothing," Lena lied quickly, locking her phone screen. "Just... a supplier update."
Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly, suspicion flickering in his dark gaze, but he didn't push. "I have to handle final security arrangements for tomorrow. I'll see you tonight at the rehearsal."
As soon as Julian walked away, Lena hurried into the private dressing room, bolted the door, and opened the PDF document on her phone.
Her blood ran ice cold.
It was a legal amendment attached to her original startup contract—a clause she had never seen, initialed with a signature that bore her initials. It stated that upon the commercial launch of The Heritage Line, 100% of the intellectual property rights and brand ownership transferred automatically to Hale Global Enterprises, leaving Lena as a salaried employee with zero equity.

And at the bottom of the document was a memo in Marcus Hale's handwriting:
Julian doesn't rescue people, Lena. He buys them. Welcome to your gilded cage.
