CHAPTER 1 â The Signature That Couldn't Be Forged

The bookstore became so quiet...
People could hear the scanner processing.
Jane's trembling thumb remained against the glass.
Three seconds.
Four.
Five.
Thenâ
ACCESS VERIFIED.
A sharp electronic tone echoed through the room.
Another message appeared.
PRIMARY CREATOR CONFIRMED.
No one breathed.
Robert Langford slowly closed his eyes.
His worst fear...
Had just become reality.
The anonymous genius whose novels had earned over three hundred million dollars...
Had been standing in front of him all alongâ
Wearing a torn coat...
Coffee stains...
And shoes held together with tape.
Someone in the crowd whispered,
"No..."
Another shook his head.
"That can't be possible."
Cassandra forced herself to laugh.
"This is ridiculous. Anyone could fake some computer trick."
Robert didn't answer.
Instead, he pressed another button.
A hidden folder opened.
Inside were hundreds of scanned manuscript pages submitted five years earlier.
Each page contained the same strange markings hidden in the margins.
The same fingerprint pressure points.
The same sequence of tiny dots.
Robert picked up one of Jane's torn handwritten pages.
Then displayed the original archive beside it.
Every tiny mark aligned perfectly.
Even the pressure variations matched.
The bookstore manager covered her mouth.
"Oh my God..."
One reader who had mocked Jane minutes earlier quietly lowered his phone.
Another slowly placed Cassandra's newest hardcover onto the table...
As though it had suddenly become contaminated.
Cassandra's smile disappeared.
"This proves nothing."
Robert finally looked directly at her.
"It proves everything."
She swallowed.
"You published those books under my contract."
"I published them," Robert replied.
"But I never met the anonymous author."
His voice became colder.
"The contract specifically required every communication to pass through Senior Editor Martin Ellis."
Robert suddenly froze.
Martin.
Where was Martin?
He had been scheduled to attend tonight's event.
He wasn't answering his phone.
Robert's assistant hurried toward him.
"Sir..."
"Martin's office is empty."
"What?"
"His assistant says he cleared out every personal item this afternoon."
Robert felt ice crawl through his chest.
Then another notification appeared on his phone.
Martin Ellis has resigned effective immediately.
Attached was a one-line email.
"By the time you read this... I'll be gone."
The room exploded with murmurs.
Jane stared blankly at the message.
Very quietly...
She whispered,
"I knew he would run."
Robert turned.
"You know Martin?"
Jane nodded slowly.
"He was the only person who ever knew my real name."
The crowd gasped.
Cassandra suddenly looked terrified.
Because if Jane knew Martin...
May you like
Then everything she'd built...
Was beginning to collapse.
