CHAPTER 7 — The Woman Everyone Thought Was Dead

Victoria stared in disbelief.

Lucas hadn't seen his grandmother in fifteen years.

Everyone in the Carter family believed Eleanor Carter had died after disappearing during a charity mission overseas.

Yet here she was.

Alive.

Elegant.

And smiling gently.

Lucas rushed forward and embraced her tightly.

"I thought..."

"You were gone."

Eleanor stroked his hair.

"I had to disappear."

"Your grandfather and I were testing more than business."

"We were protecting our family."

Samuel Brooks quietly stepped beside them.

"It's true."

"For fifteen years, Mrs. Carter has secretly supervised every charitable foundation your grandfather created."

Victoria stood speechless.

Eleanor turned toward her.

"So..."

"You're the young woman who broke my grandson's heart."

Victoria lowered her eyes.

"I don't deserve to stand here."

"No," Eleanor replied calmly.

"You don't."

The words hit harder than any slap.

"But..."

Eleanor continued.

"People are not judged by the worst thing they've ever done."

"They're judged by what they choose to become afterward."

She handed Victoria a thin envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A little girl...

About eight years old...

Standing beside Eleanor in front of a small orphanage.

The little girl's smile looked strangely familiar.

Victoria frowned.

"I've never seen this before."

Eleanor looked into her eyes.

"Look closer."

Victoria's breathing stopped.

The little girl wore a silver heart-shaped necklace.

The exact same necklace she had worn as a child...

Until it mysteriously disappeared after her mother died.

Her hands began shaking.

"How is this possible?"

Eleanor spoke softly.

"Because twenty years ago..."

"I met a frightened little girl abandoned outside one of our shelters."

"I paid for her education."

"I made sure anonymous donations reached her every year."

Victoria could barely breathe.

"...That girl..."

Eleanor nodded.

"Was you."

Tears streamed down Victoria's face.

"My whole life..."

"I thought no one cared."

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"Someone always did."

She gently held Victoria's hand.

"Which is why your final test isn't about Lucas."

"It isn't about money."

"It isn't even about your family."

"It's about whether you'll help strangers..."

"Even when no one is watching."

Lucas looked at his grandmother, confused.

"What do you mean?"

Eleanor handed him another sealed document.

"This is your grandfather's last instruction."

Lucas slowly opened it.

Inside was a list of fifty children's hospitals, homeless shelters, and orphanages across the country.

At the bottom, one sentence was written in familiar handwriting:

'The greatest heir to the Carter fortune is not the one who earns the most money... but the one who changes the most lives.'

Lucas and Victoria looked at each other in silence.

Neither of them knew...

That someone hidden in the shadows had just photographed the reunion.

And within hours, those pictures would spark a revenge plot from an enemy far more dangerous than Damian Wolfe.
