CHAPTER 6: LILY MADE THE CHOICE NO ADULT COULD

The countdown kept falling.
08:42... 08:41... 08:40...
Panic spread through the underground vault.
Nathan threw himself against the massive steel door.
It didn't move.
Michael searched every wall for a hidden switch.
Nothing.
Detective Harper spoke into her radio.
Only static answered.
They were completely trapped.
Then the distorted voice returned.
"I'll say it one last time."
"One person stays."
"The others walk free."
Lily looked around at the terrified adults.
Then she quietly stepped toward the center of the room.
"I'll stay."
"No!"
Nathan pulled her back into his arms.
"You are never sacrificing yourself."
Lily looked up at him with tears in her eyes.
"Mommy sacrificed everything for me."
"Now it's my turn."
Nathan broke down.
"I just found you."
"I'm not losing you again."
Suddenly...
A soft clicking sound echoed through the vault.
Detective Harper noticed something carved into the floor beneath the countdown clock.
It wasn't decoration.
It was a giant family crest.
Around it were four bronze circles shaped like handprints.
Nathan frowned.
"This isn't a bomb."
Michael's eyes widened.
"It's a test."
They quickly placed their hands onto three of the circles.
Nothing happened.
The fourth remained empty.
Lily slowly stepped forward.
She placed her tiny hand into the final handprint.
A bright blue light illuminated the entire chamber.
The countdown stopped.
05:13...
Frozen.
The distorted voice disappeared.
Instead, an old recording filled the room.
A familiar voice...
The voice of Reed family patriarch, William Reed.
"If you are hearing this..."
"...then my family has survived betrayal."
Nathan's eyes filled with tears.
His father's message continued.
"The inheritance was never about money."
"It was about trust."
"I created this vault to expose the greedy..."
"...and protect the innocent."
Every shelf in the room suddenly rotated.
Behind them were thousands of confidential files.
Evidence against powerful politicians.
Corrupt judges.
International businessmen.
Bribery.
Money laundering.
Assassinations.
Michael whispered,
"My God..."
"They controlled everything."
William's voice spoke one final warning.
"Anyone who opens this vault..."
"...becomes the guardian of the truth."
"But remember..."
"The people inside these files will do anything to keep their secrets buried."
Before anyone could react...
Every monitor inside the vault suddenly switched on.
A masked figure appeared.
He slowly clapped.
"Congratulations, Lily."
"You passed your grandfather's test."
"But now..."
"...you belong to us."
The screen zoomed out.
The masked man wasn't in another country.
He was standing outside the Reed mansion.
Surrounded by dozens of armed men.
Then he removed his gloves...
Revealing a tattoo Detective Harper recognized instantly.
Her face turned white.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
Nathan turned toward her.
"You know who he is?"
She whispered only three words.
May you like
"He's my husband."
