CHAPTER 2: THE VIDEO THAT BROKE THE PERFECT FAMILY

Renata didn't sleep that night.

Not even for a minute.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the same image.

Her daughter sitting alone on that bench.

Holding a stuffed rabbit.

Waiting.

Waiting for people she trusted to come back.

The worst part wasn't that Daniela had left Lucía.

The worst part was that Lucía had believed she deserved it.

At 2:17 in the morning, Renata sat beside her daughter's bed.

The room was dark except for the small night light shaped like a moon.

Lucía was finally asleep.

But even in her sleep, she held onto Renata's hand.

As if she was afraid that if she let go…

Her mother would disappear too.

Renata gently brushed her daughter's hair away from her face.

“How long have you been carrying this pain, my love?”

A tear fell down her cheek.

Because suddenly she remembered all the little signs she had ignored.

The way Lucía became quiet whenever Daniela visited.

The way she stopped asking to sleep at Grandma Leticia's house.

The way she always gave Paula the better piece of cake.

“Paula likes chocolate more, Mommy.”

“The pink chair is prettier for Paula.”

“Grandma is busy with Paula.”

Five years old.

And already learning how to make herself smaller.

Renata felt ashamed.

She had spent years telling herself that keeping the family together was best for Lucía.

That children needed relatives.

That forgiveness was important.

But she had never asked the most important question.

Did those people deserve access to her daughter?

The next morning, Renata made one decision.

She was going to expose the truth.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because she wanted protection.

At 8:05 a.m., she posted the security footage.

Not Lucía's face.

Not her daughter's pain.

Only the part showing Daniela leaving the child and watching from a distance.

The caption was simple:

"A child is not a lesson. A child is not a punishment. A child is someone you protect."

Within thirty minutes…

The video exploded.

Hundreds of comments.

Thousands of shares.

People were furious.

“How can anyone do this to a five-year-old?”

“She wasn't teaching a lesson. She was traumatizing a child.”

“That woman should never be around children.”

Renata turned off her phone.

She didn't want attention.

She wanted accountability.

But she underestimated one thing.

How far her family would go to protect their image.

At 10:30 a.m., someone knocked on her apartment door.

Renata already knew who it was.

Daniela.

She opened the door.

Her sister wasn't crying.

She wasn't apologizing.

She was angry.

“You destroyed everything.”

Renata stared at her.

“You left my daughter alone.”

“I told you it wasn't like that.”

“You watched her from behind a pillar.”

Daniela's face changed.

For the first time, she looked nervous.

“She was safe.”

“Safe?”

Renata almost laughed.

“She thought her mother didn't want her.”

Daniela rolled her eyes.

“Oh, please. She is too sensitive.”

That sentence cut deeper than any insult.

Too sensitive.

About being abandoned.

By family.

Renata stepped back.

“You need help, Daniela.”

Her sister's expression turned cold.

“You know what your problem is?”

“What?”

“You always make Lucía the victim.”

Renata froze.

Daniela continued.

“You never let her learn anything. You protect her too much. That's why Paula is stronger.”

There it was.

The truth.

The jealousy.

The comparison.

The reason behind everything.

Renata whispered:

“You hate that people love my daughter.”

Daniela's eyes narrowed.

“No.”

A pause.

“I hate that everyone always chooses you.”

Renata felt confused.

“What?”

Daniela laughed bitterly.

“You were always the perfect one.”

The words came faster now.

“Mom praised you. Dad trusted you. Everyone said Renata was responsible, Renata was kind, Renata was the good daughter.”

“And you think hurting my child fixes that?”

“No.”

Daniela looked away.

“But maybe you should know what it feels like to lose something.”

Renata went cold.

“What did you say?”

Before Daniela could answer…

Another voice came from the hallway.

“Daniela!”

Both women turned.

It was Doña Leticia.

But she wasn't angry.

She looked terrified.

“Your phone…”

Daniela looked down.

Her mother's hands were shaking.

“What about my phone?”

“Someone called.”

“Who?”

Doña Leticia swallowed.

“The police.”

Silence.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Daniela laughed nervously.

“The police? About what?”

Doña Leticia looked at Renata.

Then at Daniela.

“They asked about Lucía.”

Renata felt her stomach drop.

“Why would the police ask about my daughter?”

No one answered.

That was the moment she knew.

There was something else.

Something they weren't telling her.

“Mom?”

Doña Leticia looked away.

“Daniela…”

Renata's voice became sharper.

“What are you hiding?”

Daniela immediately interrupted.

“Nothing.”

But her reaction was too fast.

Too defensive.

Renata noticed.

She always noticed.

A mother's instinct was not something people could erase.

That afternoon, Renata received an unknown call.

She almost ignored it.

But something made her answer.

“Hello?”

A woman's voice responded.

“Is this Renata Morales?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Detective Valeria Cruz.”

Renata stood still.

“Why are you calling me?”

There was a pause.

Then:

“Because we believe your daughter may have been involved in another incident.”

Renata's blood ran cold.

“What incident?”

The detective lowered her voice.

“Five years ago, when Lucía was born…”

Renata's hand tightened around the phone.

“What about it?”

“We found a record that was never investigated properly.”

“What record?”

The detective took a breath.

“A hospital report.”

Renata felt dizzy.

“About what?”

The answer came quietly.

“About someone trying to take your baby away from you.”

Renata couldn't speak.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Her daughter.

Her family.

The lies.

Everything connected.

“Who?”

The detective hesitated.

Then said:

“We need you to come to the station.”

“Who tried to take my daughter?”

Another pause.

Then the sentence that changed everything:

“Your sister's name appears in the report.”

Renata dropped the phone.

Because suddenly…

The store incident wasn't about teaching Lucía a lesson.

It wasn't about jealousy.

It wasn't even about Paula.

It was something much darker.

For five years…

Someone had been trying to remove Lucía from her life.

And now Renata finally understood.

Daniela hadn't abandoned Lucía yesterday.

She had been trying to get rid of her for years.
