CHAPTER 3: THE FILE THAT SHOULD HAVE DISAPPEARED

Renata didn't remember driving to the police station.

She only remembered one thing.

Her daughter's face.

The way Lucía smiled when she saw her mother walk through the security office door.

The way she had whispered:

"I thought you didn't want me anymore."

That sentence had followed Renata all night.

And now there was another question burning inside her.

What happened the day Lucía was born?

Detective Valeria Cruz was waiting for her when she arrived.

She was younger than Renata expected.

Calm.

Professional.

But there was something in her eyes that told Renata this wasn't just a routine conversation.

“Thank you for coming.”

Renata sat down.

Her hands were cold.

“You said my sister's name appears in a report.”

The detective opened a folder.

Inside were old documents.

Hospital records.

Statements.

A photograph of a newborn baby bracelet.

Renata's heart stopped.

She recognized it immediately.

Lucía Morales.

The name she had chosen five years ago.

The name she had whispered while holding her daughter for the first time.

“What is this?”

Detective Cruz looked at her carefully.

“Before I explain, I need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“On the day Lucía was born… were you alone?”

Renata frowned.

“No.”

She swallowed.

“My mother was there.”

“And your sister?”

“Yes.”

The detective nodded slowly.

“Did anything unusual happen?”

Renata tried to remember.

Five years ago felt like another lifetime.

The pain.

The exhaustion.

The happiness.

Everything had blurred together.

“I had a difficult delivery,” she said.

“I was unconscious for several hours after surgery.”

“And while you were unconscious…”

The detective paused.

“Someone attempted to sign documents requesting temporary custody of your baby.”

Renata felt like the air had disappeared.

“What?”

“The documents claimed you were not emotionally stable enough to care for a newborn.”

Renata stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“We know.”

“Who signed them?”

The detective pushed the paper forward.

Renata looked down.

And her entire body went numb.

The signature was there.

Clear.

Impossible to deny.

Daniela Morales.

Her sister.

“No.”

Renata shook her head.

“No, she wouldn't.”

The detective remained silent.

Because sometimes silence was the only answer.

Renata grabbed the document.

“She told me she was happy for me.”

“She said she loved Lucía.”

“She cried when she held her.”

The detective looked at her.

“People can say many things while hiding what they really want.”

Renata felt tears building.

“Why?”

That was the only question.

Why would her own sister try to take her child?

At that exact moment, Daniela was sitting in her mother's living room.

Watching the chaos online.

The video had spread everywhere.

Neighbors were talking.

Relatives were calling.

Her carefully created image was collapsing.

Doña Leticia walked in holding a phone.

“You need to fix this.”

Daniela looked up.

“Fix what?”

“Our family.”

Daniela laughed bitterly.

“Our family was never perfect.”

Her mother froze.

“What did you say?”

Daniela stood.

“You all loved pretending everything was beautiful.”

“Grandma. Mom. The perfect daughters.”

She pointed toward an old family photo.

“Look at that picture.”

Doña Leticia looked.

It was Renata and Daniela as children.

Renata holding a trophy.

Daniela standing beside her.

Smiling.

But her eyes were different.

“She was always the one everyone noticed.”

“That is not true.”

“Yes, it is.”

Daniela's voice cracked.

“Renata was responsible. Renata was smart. Renata was the daughter Dad was proud of.”

“And me?”

Her mother didn't answer.

That silence said everything.

When Renata returned home, Lucía was drawing at the kitchen table.

She looked up.

“Mommy?”

Renata forced a smile.

“Yes, baby?”

“Are we going back to Grandma's house?”

Renata froze.

“No.”

“Why?”

Because Grandma let someone hurt you.

Because Aunt Daniela wanted to erase you.

Because Mommy ignored too many warning signs.

But she couldn't say those things.

Not to a five-year-old.

Instead, she knelt beside her daughter.

“Because sometimes people who love us can still make very bad choices.”

Lucía looked confused.

“Like when I spilled juice on the sofa?”

Renata's heart broke.

“No, sweetheart.”

She hugged her.

“Much bigger choices.”

That night, Renata received another message from Detective Cruz.

A photo.

Just one image.

A hospital security camera.

Timestamp:

The day Lucía was born.

Renata opened it.

And her hands began shaking.

The image showed Daniela leaving the maternity floor.

Holding something.

A small folder.

The same folder that contained the custody papers.

But there was something else.

Something Renata hadn't noticed before.

Behind Daniela…

A man was following her.

A man Renata recognized.

Her father.

The grandfather who had always told Lucía:

"You are my little angel."

Renata couldn't breathe.

Her entire family had known.

Not just Daniela.

Not just her mother.

Everyone.

She called Detective Cruz immediately.

“Why didn't anyone tell me this before?”

The detective answered quietly.

“Because the report was buried.”

“By who?”

A long pause.

Then:

“The hospital director at the time received a large payment to mark the case as a misunderstanding.”

Renata's voice trembled.

“Who paid him?”

The detective didn't answer immediately.

And Renata already knew.

She just didn't want to believe it.

Finally, the detective said:

“The bank records show the payment came from an account belonging to your father.”

Renata sat down slowly.

Her father.

The man who carried Lucía on his shoulders.

The man who told everyone he loved his granddaughter.

Had paid to erase the truth.

Her phone suddenly rang.

Daniela.

Renata stared at the screen.

Then answered.

For several seconds, neither sister spoke.

Finally Daniela whispered:

“You found out, didn't you?”

Renata closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

A long silence.

Then Daniela said something that made Renata's blood freeze.

“Good.”

“What?”

“Maybe now you'll finally understand.”

“Understand what?”

Daniela's voice broke.

“That Lucía was never supposed to be yours.”

Renata stood up.

“What did you say?”

And then Daniela revealed the secret that would change everything.

“Because Lucía…”

A pause.

A trembling breath.

May you like

“…was supposed to be my daughter.”

TO BE CONTINUED…
