CHAPTER 5: THE CHILD WHO CHOSE HER MOTHER

The envelope sat on the kitchen table for almost three hours.

Renata had not touched it.

Not because she was afraid of the result.

Because she was afraid of what the result would destroy.

Five years.

Five years of memories.

Five years of waking up in the middle of the night to check if Lucía was breathing.

Five years of first words.

First steps.

First day of kindergarten.

Five years of being called:

“Mommy.”

Could a piece of paper erase all of that?

No.

But it could reveal who had betrayed her.

Lucía was sitting on the floor, drawing again.

The same picture.

Two little girls.

Holding hands.

A giant sun above them.

Renata watched quietly.

“Who are they?”

Lucía looked up.

“Me and Paula.”

Renata blinked.

“Why?”

“Because even when people are mean, I think they can become nice.”

The answer broke her heart.

Her daughter still had kindness inside her.

Even after everything.

The phone rang.

Detective Cruz.

“Renata.”

Her voice was serious.

“The results are ready.”

Renata closed her eyes.

“Tell me.”

A long pause.

Then:

“Lucía is your biological daughter.”

Renata covered her mouth.

A wave of relief passed through her.

But it lasted only seconds.

“Then why…”

The detective interrupted.

“Because someone tried to manipulate the records.”

Renata stood.

“What?”

“The hospital confirmed the mistake was corrected the same day.”

“Then Daniela…”

“She was lied to.”

Renata froze.

“What do you mean?”

The detective continued.

“Your sister believed her baby had died because someone showed her false information.”

“Who?”

Silence.

Then:

“We found the answer.”

The next morning, Renata asked everyone to meet.

Her mother.

Her sister.

Her father.

And her husband, Marco.

The same people who had smiled in family photos.

The same people who claimed to love Lucía.

But now…

There would be no pretending.

No excuses.

No hiding.

They sat in the living room.

Nobody spoke.

Until Renata placed the hospital documents on the table.

“Five years.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Five years you all allowed me to live inside a lie.”

Doña Leticia immediately looked away.

Marco became tense.

Daniela stared at the floor.

Renata noticed.

And she understood.

They all knew something.

“You want answers?”

Her voice shook.

“Then I want the truth.”

Nobody responded.

So Renata turned to Daniela.

“You thought Lucía was your daughter.”

Daniela started crying.

“Yes.”

“And you thought I stole her from you.”

“I thought…”

Daniela stopped.

“I thought everyone chose you again.”

Renata looked at her sister.

For the first time, she didn't see an enemy.

She saw a woman who had been manipulated.

But forgiveness wasn't possible yet.

Not after what happened to Lucía.

Then Renata turned to her mother.

“Mom.”

Doña Leticia's face changed.

“Tell me what happened.”

The older woman remained silent.

“Tell me!”

Finally…

She broke.

“I was trying to protect my family.”

Renata laughed bitterly.

“Protect?”

“You destroyed it.”

Doña Leticia cried.

“I made mistakes.”

“No.”

Renata shook her head.

“Mistakes happen once.”

She pointed toward Lucía's bedroom.

“You made choices for five years.”

Then Marco spoke.

“I can explain.”

Everyone turned.

Renata stared at him.

“You.”

Her voice became cold.

“You knew.”

Marco looked down.

“I found out later.”

“When?”

Silence.

“When, Marco?”

“Three months after Lucía was born.”

Renata felt something collapse inside her.

“You knew for five years?”

“I didn't know what to do.”

“What to do?”

Her voice rose.

“You were my husband!”

Marco stood.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

He didn't answer.

So Renata did.

“You were afraid of losing your perfect family.”

The truth finally came out.

After Lucía's birth, Marco discovered the hospital confusion.

He learned Daniela had been told her baby died.

He learned Doña Leticia had hidden the truth.

But instead of exposing everything…

He stayed quiet.

Because he was afraid.

Afraid of scandal.

Afraid of losing his reputation.

Afraid of admitting that the family everyone admired was built on lies.

So he chose silence.

And silence became another betrayal.

Then Lucía walked into the room.

Everyone froze.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit.

The same one from the store.

“Mommy?”

Renata immediately stood.

“Baby, go back to your room.”

But Lucía looked around.

At all the adults.

At the people who had hurt her.

Then she asked:

“Are you all fighting because of me?”

Nobody answered.

The little girl lowered her eyes.

“I knew it.”

Renata knelt.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Yes.”

Lucía whispered:

“People always fight when I'm there.”

The room went silent.

Then she looked at Daniela.

“Aunt Daniela?”

Daniela wiped her tears.

“Yes?”

“Did you leave me because you don't love me?”

Daniela broke.

“No.”

She covered her face.

“No, baby. I was angry. I was hurt. But you never deserved that.”

Lucía looked at her for a long time.

Then she asked:

“Then why did you make me feel like nobody wanted me?”

That sentence destroyed Daniela.

Because no adult could answer a child asking for the reason behind their cruelty.

Weeks later…

The family was no longer the same.

Doña Leticia admitted everything publicly.

Marco moved out after Renata filed for separation.

Daniela began therapy and spent months trying to rebuild trust.

But Renata never forced Lucía to forgive anyone.

Because she finally understood something:

Family is not only about blood.

Family is about who makes a child feel safe.

Six months later, Renata took Lucía back to Plaza Universidad.

The same store.

The same place where everything had fallen apart.

But this time, something was different.

Lucía held her mother's hand.

“Are you scared, Mommy?”

Renata smiled.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because now I know something.”

“What?”

Renata squeezed her daughter's hand.

“People can lie.”

She looked at Lucía.

“But love always tells the truth.”

Lucía smiled.

Then she pointed toward the toy section.

“Can I get another rabbit?”

Renata laughed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because that little rabbit helped me find you.”

Lucía hugged her.

May you like

And for the first time in months…

Renata felt peace.
