Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Frozen GlassThe world faded back into sharp, icy focus through a haze of agony.

I was on my back on the living room rug. The biting chill of the balcony air was still trapped in my clothes, but inside the apartment, a terrifying silence had replaced the cheerful sounds of Thanksgiving.
Alejandro was on his knees beside me, his face ghostly white, hands shaking violently as he pressed a folded blanket over my chest. âMaya! Maya, stay with me! Look at me!â he sobbed, his voice cracking with a hysteria I had never heard in him before.
âThe baby...â I gasped, my throat raw from screaming. Another ruthless spasm tore through my lower body, making my vision go white. âAlejandro... the baby...â
âThe ambulance is coming! Five minutes!â his father shouted frantically into his phone from the hallway.
And then I saw her.
Paola stood near the hallway archway, her face drained of all color, her lips parted in disbelief. But she wasn't just paleâshe was glaring at me with a desperate, defensive panic.
âSheâs exaggerating!â Paola stammered, stepping forward, her voice high and shrill. âAlejandro, donât let her trick you! She was only out there for two minutes! She faked a fainting spell because she wanted attentionâsheâs just trying to make me look bad!â
âTwo minutes?!â Alejandro snapped, turning his head toward her with a look of pure savagery. âHer hands are blue, Paola! Her lips are gray! She was locked out there in sub-zero weather while we were downstairs taking out the trash!â
âI didnât lock it! The latch slipped!â Paola lied instantly, her voice trembling. âIt was an accident! Sheâs acting like a victim because she hates me!â
I tried to speak, to tell him how she had looked me dead in the eye, how she had smiled and told me to suffer, but the pain swallowed my words whole. Down below, a warm, terrifying slickness spread across my legs.
My mother-in-law, Elena, gasped in horror as she saw the dark stain pooling through my sweatpants onto the rug. âOh, God! Blood! Alejandro, sheâs bleeding!â
Alejandro looked down, and the sight broke something inside him. He whipped around toward Paola, stepping over me, his hands curling into fists. âWhat did you do to her?! WHAT DID YOU DO?!â
âI didnât do anything!â Paola shrieked, backing away into the kitchen counters, knocking over a tray of silver cutlery that clattered violently against the floor. âSheâs the one who went outside! She wanted to put the soda bottles out there! Ask her! Itâs her fault!â
Before Alejandro could reach her, the front door burst open. Paramedics flooded the apartment, carrying a stretcher and heavy medical bags.
âTwenty-eight weeks pregnant! Severe hypothermia exposure, acute abdominal distress, heavy vaginal bleeding!â the lead paramedic yelled into his radio, taking my pulse as he dropped to his knees. âPressure is dropping fast! We need a direct transport to St. Judeâs Trauma Unit NOW!â
They lifted me onto the gurney. The movement triggered a blood-curdling wave of pain, and I screamedâa sound so hollow and agonized that even the paramedics flinched.
As they wheeled me out into the hallway, I caught one last glimpse of Paola. She wasn't crying for me. She was frantically whispering to her mother, trying to rewrite the story before the police arrived.
âDonât let her die,â Alejandro sobbed, running alongside the gurney, gripping my freezing hand. âPlease, God, donât let my baby die...â

Inside the ambulance, the heart monitor began to beep in a frantic, irregular rhythm. The paramedic pressed an oxygen mask onto my face, his eyes wide with urgency.
âHold on, Maya,â he whispered, slamming his fist against the partition window leading to the driver. âLIGHTS AND SIRENS! WEâRE LOSING THE FETAL HEARTBEAT!â
