CHAPTER 1 — The Tattoo That Shouldn't Exist

The old Polaroid shook in Joseph Salvini's hand.

Not because he was afraid.

Because for the first time in more than twenty years...

The man who ruled Chicago's underworld no longer trusted his own eyes.

Audrey stared at the faded photograph.

A younger version of her mother smiled beneath a summer sunset, her hair blowing across her face. Around her wrist wrapped the exact constellation tattoo Audrey had seen every day growing up.

Only...

There was another wrist in the picture.

A man's.

His hand intertwined with Rose's.

The same constellation.

The same stars.

The same tiny crescent moon near the thumb.

Audrey slowly looked up.

Then at Joseph's wrist.

Then back to the photograph.

Her breathing stopped.

"My mom..." she whispered.

"...never told me this picture existed."

Joseph's eyes filled with something no one inside the Golden Crown restaurant had ever witnessed.

Tears.

Not one of his bodyguards dared move.

Not one.

The man who had survived wars between five mafia families...

Who had buried enemies beneath concrete...

Who had negotiated with politicians, billionaires, and killers without blinking...

Now looked like someone whose entire world had cracked open.

"When is your birthday?" he asked.

"August nineteenth."

Joseph closed his eyes.

Exactly.

Exactly the date she would have been born.

His lieutenant, Marco Romano, leaned closer.

"Boss?"

Joseph ignored him.

"Your mother told you your father died?"

Audrey nodded.

"She said he never knew about me."

Joseph staggered backward.

Every sentence pierced deeper than the last.

Because Rose had believed exactly the same thing.

Twenty years earlier...

Rose Bennett had disappeared after Joseph's enemies kidnapped her.

When she finally escaped weeks later, she found Joseph's mansion burned to the ground.

Everyone said Joseph Salvini was dead.

At the same time...

Joseph had received a forged medical report claiming Rose had suffered a miscarriage before disappearing overseas.

Two lies.

One carefully planned deception.

Two people forced apart forever.

Or so someone had hoped.

Joseph whispered only one sentence.

"I never stopped looking for her."

Audrey searched his face.

There was no cruelty.

No manipulation.

Only unbearable regret.

The restaurant manager quietly asked whether the police should be called.

Joseph reached into his jacket.

Every bodyguard instinctively prepared for violence.

Instead...

He removed a tiny silver necklace.

Inside hung half of a broken compass.

"I gave Rose the other half."

Audrey's face lost all color.

"My mother still wears one exactly like that."

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

Joseph finally understood.

Someone hadn't simply destroyed his family.

Someone had spent twenty years making sure they never found each other.

And whoever had engineered that betrayal...

Was probably still alive.

An hour later...

A convoy of black SUVs rolled silently through Chicago.

Not toward Joseph's mansion.

Toward the modest apartment Audrey reluctantly agreed to show him.

She sat beside him in silence.

Finally she asked...

"If you're telling the truth..."

"...why would anyone separate us?"

Joseph stared through the rain-covered window.

"Because if I had a wife and a daughter..."

"...I would have abandoned the mafia."

Those words hit Audrey harder than she expected.

For the first time...

She believed him.

She also realized something terrifying.

If someone had stolen twenty years from Joseph Salvini...

That person would do anything...

To keep the truth buried.

As the convoy turned onto Rose Bennett's quiet street...

None of them noticed the black sedan parked three houses away.

Inside...

A gray-haired man lowered a pair of binoculars.

He smiled.

"So..."

"They finally found each other."

He picked up a satellite phone.

"Begin Phase Two."

May you like

Miles away...

A sniper quietly assembled his rifle.
