Chapter 5 - The Midnight Siege

Clickbait Hook: They trapped her in her own home, thinking she was defenseless. They forgot one thing: a mother with nothing left to lose is the most dangerous creature alive."I know what you did to my son!" Eleanor shouted from the darkness of the kitchen, her voice ringing with a fierce, terrifying strength she didn't know she possessed.
The flashlights instantly whipped toward her voice.
"Arthur was a nosy brat, just like his father," Miller sneered, stepping forward. "He wouldn't take the bribe. We had no choice. Now hand over the ledger, Eleanor!"
"Go to hell, Thomas," Eleanor whispered.
BOOM!
The roar of the shotgun was deafening in the enclosed space. The blast tore through the kitchen doorway, shattering a glass cabinet and catching one of Miller's deputies square in the shoulder. The man shrieked, collapsing into the darkness.
"Kill her! Kill the old witch!" Miller roared, pulling his service weapon and firing blindly into the kitchen.
Bullets ripped through the old wooden walls, tearing apart the memories Eleanor had cherished for decades. Pots and pans clattered to the floor as she scrambled behind the heavy cast-iron stove, covering her head.
The air was thick with gunpowder smoke and the smell of splintered wood. Eleanor’s ears were ringing. She tried to reload the shotgun, but her arthritic fingers fumbled, dropping a shell onto the floor. It rolled away into the darkness.
"You're out of ammo, Eleanor," Miller’s voice chuckled darkly from just outside the kitchen door. "It's over."
Eleanor closed her eyes, preparing herself for the end. She had fought hard, but she was a frail old woman against armed killers. She wrapped her fingers around her son's signet ring in her pocket. I'm coming, Arthur, she thought.
Suddenly, a massive crash shook the back of the house.
The kitchen window shattered into a million pieces as a heavy, dark figure vaulted through the frame. Before Miller could react, the figure slammed into him, throwing him into the living room.
Gunfire erupted again, but it wasn't Miller's weapon. It was the rapid, tactical burst of automatic gunfire.
Through the haze of smoke, Eleanor saw them. The dangerous strangers had returned. The leader, his face streaked with blood and soot, stood over her, his rifle smoking. The other two men were moving with military precision, clearing the living room and neutralizing Miller's men in a matter of seconds.

The leader knelt down beside Eleanor, offering a massive, tattooed hand to help her up.
"We told you we wouldn't cause trouble, ma'am," the leader said, a grim, respectful smile breaking through the dirt on his face. "But we never said we wouldn't finish it."
