CHAPTER 2 — "The Woman They Never Bothered to Know"

The restaurant manager entered the private room carrying a slim black folder.
His expression wasn't nervous.
It was respectful.
Very respectful.
He walked directly past Reid.
Past Tessa.
Past every executive.
Until he stopped beside the speakerphone.
Although Wilma wasn't physically present...
He bowed slightly.
"Mrs. Tate."
"Your instructions have been followed."
Gasps filled the room.
Tessa stared.
"You... know her?"
The manager looked confused.
"Of course."
"Mrs. Tate has hosted charity galas here for almost fifteen years."
The room froze.
One executive nearly dropped his wine glass.
"Wait..."
"You mean..."
"The Wilma Tate?"
The manager nodded.
"The founder of Tate Freight Logistics."
Every head snapped toward Reid.
His breathing became uneven.
"No..."
"No..."
"My mother retired from dispatch."
The manager looked at him with genuine surprise.
"No, sir."
"She began as a dispatcher."
"She eventually purchased the company."
"Forty-two years ago."
Another guest whispered...
"Tate Freight..."
"That's the logistics company everyone thought was about to sell..."
The manager smiled politely.
"It sold tonight."
"For one hundred sixty-five million dollars."
The number exploded through the room like thunder.
One...
Hundred...
Sixty-five...
Million.
Even Tessa forgot to breathe.
Her perfectly rehearsed confidence shattered.
She slowly looked toward Reid.
"You... never told me..."
He stared back in disbelief.
"I didn't know."
Across the room...
One of the senior executives suddenly stood.
His face had become ghostly white.
"Oh my God."
Everyone looked at him.
"I've spent six months negotiating with Tate Freight."
"My company was buying them."
His voice trembled.
"I met the owner's attorneys..."
"But the owner never attended."
He slowly looked toward the speakerphone.
"It was..."
"You?"
Wilma answered simply.
"I prefer letting capable people speak for me."
The executive swallowed hard.
Then...
To everyone's horror...
He stood.
Faced the speakerphone.
And apologized.
"I'm deeply sorry, Mrs. Tate."
One by one...
Other guests followed.
The room transformed into something surreal.
Executives...
Friends...
Neighbors...
People who had laughed thirty minutes earlier...
Now apologized to the woman they had treated like furniture.
Everyone...
Except Tessa.
She folded her arms.
"This changes nothing."
"Money doesn't buy respect."
Wilma smiled quietly.
"You're absolutely right."
"It doesn't."
"But character earns it."
"And tonight..."
May you like
"You spent yours."
End of Chapter 2
"Some fortunes are counted in dollars. Others are counted in the people who still stand beside you after the money disappears."
