Chapter 3 - The Billionaire Awakes

Arthur Sterling, CEO of Sterling Global, did not die in the mud.

His private security team had tracked his phone's last GPS ping, finding him hours after Lily was arrested. He had been in a coma for three weeks.

"Sir, you need to rest," his head of security, Vance, urged as Arthur ripped the IVs from his arm.

"Where is she?" Arthur demanded, his voice a raspy roar. "A little girl. Brown hair. Too thin. She saved my life."

"Sir, we searched the town. There was no girl. Only this."

Vance handed Arthur a plastic evidence bag. Inside was the faded blue handkerchief with crooked, hand-drawn stars. The "magic cloth."

Arthur stared at the cloth, and suddenly, his breath caught in his throat. His hands began to tremble violently. He turned the cloth over. Embroidered in the corner, barely visible beneath the mud and dried blood, were the initials: E. S.

"Eleanor Sterling," Arthur whispered, a tear slipping down his hardened face. It was his runaway daughter’s monogrammed handkerchief. The daughter he had been searching for relentlessly for eight years. The daughter who had disappeared into the underbelly of Ohio.

"Get my helicopter," Arthur commanded, a terrifying fire igniting in his eyes. "Buy the town of Oakridge if you have to. I am finding that child."

Meanwhile, Lily was trapped in a nightmare. The "foster home" in Texas was a labor farm. She worked fourteen hours a day scrubbing floors, her only comfort the memory of Emma’s laugh.

One evening, while cleaning the foster mother's office, Lily saw a newspaper on the desk. The headline made her drop her bucket: BILLIONAIRE ARTHUR STERLING OFFERS $10 MILLION REWARD FOR 'GIRL IN THE BARN'.
