Chapter 4 - The Escape

"Who do you think you're calling, you little brat?" her foster father hissed, ripping the phone cord from the wall.
Lily didn't hesitate. She had survived the streets of Oakridge; she wasn't going to die in a Texas farmhouse. She grabbed the heavy brass paperweight from the desk and smashed it into the man's knee. He roared in pain, dropping her.
Lily bolted. She ran into the freezing night, hiding in the bed of a commercial produce truck idling at a nearby gas station.
For three days, she survived on raw carrots and rainwater as the truck drove north. Her mission was clear: find Arthur Sterling, tell him who she was, and ask for his help to find Emma.
She arrived in Chicago, a tiny, dirty speck in a city of glass giants. She walked ten miles to the Sterling Global tower. But the guards at the front desk took one look at her muddy clothes and laughed.
"Get lost, kid," the guard said, pushing her toward the revolving doors. "Mr. Sterling doesn't see beggars."
"Tell him I have the magic cloth!" Lily screamed, fighting against the guard's grip. "Tell him I hid him in the pit!"
A chilling voice suddenly echoed through the grand lobby.
"Let her go."
The lobby fell dead silent. Stepping out of a private elevator was Arthur Sterling. He leaned heavily on a silver cane, looking older, paler, but radiating absolute authority.
He locked eyes with Lily. The ruthless billionaire dropped to his knees right there in the marble lobby, heedless of his custom suit, and pulled the filthy, trembling seven-year-old into a desperate embrace.

"I found you," he sobbed into her hair. "I finally found you."
[END OF CHAPTER 4 HOOK] 👉 Lily thought she was safe. But Arthur’s second-in-command was watching from the mezzanine, dialing a burner phone to say: "The girl is here. Execute Phase Two. Kill them both."
