CHAPTER 1

It was supposed to be another glamorous charity dinner.

Crystal chandeliers sparkled above hundreds of wealthy guests dressed in designer suits and glittering gowns. Waiters moved gracefully between tables carrying silver trays while a string quartet filled the ballroom with soft classical music.

No one noticed the young waitress except when something went wrong.

Her name was Emily.

Twenty-three years old.

Working double shifts every day just to pay hospital bills for the grandmother who had raised her.

She wore a simple black uniform, tied her dark hair into a neat ponytail, and smiled politely at every guest—even the rude ones.

That night she was assigned to serve the VIP table.

The richest businessman in the city...

Nathan Whitmore.

Beside him sat his elegant wife, Victoria.

Victoria had built her reputation on looking perfect.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect jewelry.

Perfect smile.

But beneath that polished appearance hid a woman consumed by jealousy.

When Emily leaned over to refill Nathan's wine glass, Nathan politely thanked her with a small smile.

That single smile was enough.

Victoria's face instantly darkened.

"Oh... so that's your little trick?" she sneered loudly.

The ballroom became strangely quiet.

Emily blinked in confusion.

"I'm sorry, ma'am?"

"You think smiling at married men will earn you a better tip?"

Emily froze.

"I wasn't—"

Before she could finish...

SLAP!

Victoria's hand crashed across her face so hard that the tray flew into the air.

Crystal glasses shattered across the marble floor.

Guests gasped.

Emily stumbled backward, one hand covering her burning cheek as tears instantly filled her eyes.

"You disgusting little gold digger!" Victoria screamed.

"I know girls like you."

"You flirt with rich husbands because you're too lazy to earn your own money!"

Several guests awkwardly looked away.

Others secretly recorded everything on their phones.

The restaurant manager hurried over.

"I'm terribly sorry, Mrs. Whitmore..."

Victoria pointed toward the entrance.

"Fire her."

"Throw her out."

"I never want to see this pathetic waitress near my husband again."

Emily's lips trembled.

"I wasn't flirting..."

"I was only doing my job."

Victoria laughed coldly.

"Save your fake tears."

Nathan finally spoke.

"Victoria... maybe this is enough."

She glared at him.

"So you're defending her now?"

"I knew it!"

Emily quietly bent down to collect the broken glass.

Her hands shook so badly that tiny cuts appeared across her fingers.

Drops of blood landed on the white marble floor.

She whispered,

"I'm sorry..."

Then...

Instead of leaving...

Emily slowly reached inside the worn pocket of her apron.

She pulled out an old brown envelope.

The edges were torn.

It had obviously been folded hundreds of times.

Nathan's eyes immediately locked onto it.

Emily looked directly at him.

Not with anger.

Not with hatred.

Only heartbreak.

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I came here tonight because my grandmother told me to give this to you..."

She carefully unfolded one wrinkled legal document.

Nathan's face instantly lost every trace of color.

His wine glass slipped from his hand.

It shattered beside his expensive shoes.

For the first time in years...

The billionaire looked terrified.

Victoria frowned.

"What is that?"

Nathan couldn't answer.

May you like

Because he already knew exactly what the document was.

And it contained a secret he had buried for more than twenty-three years.
