CHAPTER 8 — “The Vault Was Opened… And The Skeleton Was Wearing Henry Sterling’s Watch”

The ancient steel door groaned open beneath the Sterling family cemetery.

Dust filled the air.

Cold wind rushed from the darkness below, carrying the smell of rust and decay.

Emma tightened her grip on Grace's hand as paramedics rushed her into surgery.

Before losing consciousness, Grace whispered one last sentence.

"Don't let them erase us... again."

Those words gave Emma the courage to step inside.

Ethan followed.

So did the old butler and two detectives.

Their flashlights pierced the darkness as they descended a spiral staircase that seemed to stretch forever.

Finally...

They reached a massive underground chamber.

Rows of locked filing cabinets lined the walls.

Stacks of gold bars sat untouched.

Paintings worth millions leaned against the stone.

But no one cared about the treasure.

Because in the center of the room...

Sat a human skeleton in an old wooden chair.

Still wearing a luxury watch.

The old butler collapsed to his knees.

"No..."

Emma slowly approached.

Although time had reduced the body to bones...

The watch was unmistakable.

It was Henry Sterling's custom-made gold watch.

The very same watch everyone claimed had been buried with him twenty-three years ago.

Emma whispered,

"If Henry's body is here..."

"Then who is buried in the Sterling family tomb?"

One detective immediately radioed the cemetery.

"Open Henry Sterling's grave. Right now."

Hours later...

The answer came.

The detective's voice cracked over the radio.

"The coffin..."

"...is empty."

Silence consumed the underground vault.

Every member of the Sterling family had visited that grave for more than two decades.

Every anniversary.

Every birthday.

Every funeral.

They had been mourning...

An empty coffin.

As investigators examined the skeleton, Emma noticed something hidden beneath the chair.

A small metal box.

Inside was a voice recorder.

Its battery should have died decades ago.

Yet when Ethan pressed the play button...

A weak recording filled the chamber.

Henry's voice.

"If you're hearing this..."

"I failed."

Everyone stood frozen.

"The Sterling fortune was never the real prize."

"The real secret..."

"...is hidden inside the twins."

Emma and Ethan exchanged horrified looks.

Henry continued.

"Emma and Grace carry something far more valuable than money."

"Their mother volunteered for an experimental medical program before they were born."

"Someone has spent twenty-three years hunting them because of what runs through their blood."

Emma felt the room spin.

"This was never about inheritance..."

Before Henry could finish his message...

The recording abruptly stopped.

A gunshot echoed through the vault.

The recorder exploded in Emma's hands.

The lights went out.

Darkness swallowed everyone.

Then a familiar woman's voice echoed through the chamber.

Cold.

Calm.

Victorious.

"Welcome back, Emma."

"You've finally found what I wanted you to find."

The emergency lights flickered on.

Standing at the entrance of the vault...

Surrounded by armed mercenaries...

Was Victoria Sterling.

Smiling.

Beside her stood a doctor wearing a white lab coat.

The doctor removed his mask.

The old butler gasped.

"It can't be..."

The man smiled.

"I signed Amelia's death certificate."

"And today..."

May you like

"I'm here to finish what I started."

To Be Continued…
