chapter 1

The ballroom sparkled like something out of a fairy tale.
Crystal chandeliers bathed the marble floor in golden light while a string quartet played softly beneath the laughter of politicians, celebrities, and billionaires.
Tonight was supposed to be the wedding of the year.
Every camera in the city was waiting for the moment billionaire heir Ethan Lancaster would say, "I do."
No one expected the ceremony to stop.
Least of all...
...because of a little girl.
She couldn't have been older than eight.
Her cream-colored dress was wrinkled, her shoes were worn, and her tiny hands trembled as she walked alone through the massive ballroom.
Guests exchanged confused glances.
"Whose child is that?"
"Did she get lost?"
"Someone stop her before security does."
But the little girl kept walking.
Straight toward the groom.
Every step echoed louder than the orchestra.
The bride frowned.
The guests whispered.
Security started moving.
Then...
The girl raised her voice.
"Please..."
"I need to talk to him."
The room erupted with laughter.
One businessman smirked.
"Wrong wedding, sweetheart."
Another guest rolled his eyes.
"This is ridiculous."
Security reached for her shoulder—
"Wait."
Ethan's voice stopped everyone.
He stared at the girl.
Something about her face...
Those blue eyes.
The shape of her smile.
For just a second...
She reminded him of someone he'd spent years trying to forget.
He knelt in front of her.
"What is it?"
The little girl swallowed hard.
Instead of answering...
She pulled a tiny silver locket from her pocket.
It was scratched.
Old.
Almost worthless.
Except...
The instant Ethan saw it...
The color drained from his face.
His hands began to shake.
"Where..."
"...did you get this?"
The little girl looked around nervously before leaning closer.
Almost whispering.
"My mommy said..."
"...you would recognize it."
The bride stepped forward.
"Ethan?"
He didn't answer.
His eyes never left the locket.
Because twenty years earlier...
He had given that exact necklace to the only woman he had ever truly loved.
The woman who disappeared without saying goodbye.
The woman everyone claimed had died.
His heart pounded violently.
"Who is your mother?"
The girl's lips quivered.
"I'll tell you..."
"...but only if you promise not to let them take me away."
Before Ethan could answer...
The ballroom doors burst open.
Four security guards rushed inside.
Behind them stood an elegant silver-haired woman dressed in diamonds.
Ethan's mother.
Margaret Lancaster.
One of the most powerful women in the country.
Her face turned ice cold the moment she saw the child.
"There she is."
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Remove that girl immediately."
The child panicked.
She clutched Ethan's arm with desperate strength.
"No!"
"They'll kill my mommy if I leave!"
The ballroom fell into stunned silence.
Someone dropped a champagne glass.
It shattered across the marble floor.
Ethan slowly turned toward his mother.
For the first time in years...
He saw fear.
Not in the little girl's eyes.
But in his mother's.
Margaret's expression hardened.
"Don't listen to her."
"She's lying."
But then...
The little girl reached into her tiny purse one last time.
She unfolded an old photograph.
The edges were burned.
The colors had faded.
Yet everyone could still see the faces.
A much younger Ethan...
Holding a newborn baby.
On the back of the photo...
Six handwritten words changed everything.
"She never told you the truth."
Ethan's knees nearly gave out.
Because he had never held a baby in his life...
May you like
...or so he had always believed.
END OF CHAPTER 1...
But the biggest secret hasn't even been revealed yet...
