CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN WHO SACRIFICED HERSELF

The mansion exploded into chaos.

Concrete rained from the ceiling.

Ancient wooden beams snapped like matchsticks.

Smoke swallowed the hallway.

"Ethan!"

Anna's scream echoed through the collapsing house.

Without thinking, Ethan grabbed Lily with one arm and reached for Anna with the other.

But before he could pull her from the hospital bed...

A massive beam crashed between them.

BOOM!

Dust filled the room.

"Dad!"

Lily cried, coughing through the smoke.

Ethan tried to climb over the burning debris.

"Anna! Hold on!"

On the other side of the broken beam, Anna smiled through the tears.

It wasn't the smile of someone waiting to be rescued.

It was the smile of someone saying goodbye.

"You have to save her."

"No!"

"You promised we'd finally be together."

Anna slowly shook her head.

"I've waited twenty years for this moment."

"But Lily has waited her entire life for a father."

Another explosion ripped through the mansion.

The floor cracked beneath Ethan's feet.

Richard Lancaster calmly walked toward the hidden exit behind the secret room.

He wasn't running.

He had planned every second.

Margaret followed him...

But halfway to the tunnel, she stopped.

She looked back.

For years she had obeyed Richard without question.

She had lied.

Destroyed lives.

Separated Ethan from Anna.

Raised her own son inside a prison of lies.

Yet as she watched Ethan desperately trying to reach Anna...

Something inside her finally broke.

Richard noticed.

"Margaret."

His voice became dangerously quiet.

"Move."

She didn't.

"I said move."

Instead...

Margaret turned around.

For the first time in twenty-three years...

She pointed her gun at her husband.

Richard's smile disappeared.

"You wouldn't."

Margaret laughed bitterly.

"I already lost my son."

"I'm not losing my granddaughter."

BANG!

The bullet struck Richard in the chest.

He stumbled backward into the secret passage.

His body disappeared into the darkness.

No one knew whether he had fallen...

Or escaped.

The tunnel door slammed shut automatically.

Locked.

Forever.

Meanwhile...

The room was collapsing.

Anna looked at Ethan one last time.

"I need you to promise me something."

"No."

"I won't promise anything until I get you out."

"Ethan..."

Her voice was fading.

"If Richard survives..."

"He'll never stop hunting Lily."

She reached beneath her pillow.

With trembling hands, she pulled out a tiny silver flash drive attached to the same broken locket Ethan had recognized at the wedding.

"This is everything."

"The money."

"The murders."

"The fake deaths."

"The judges."

"The politicians."

"The people who helped Richard build his empire."

Ethan stared at the tiny device.

"This can destroy him."

Anna nodded weakly.

"It can destroy all of them."

Suddenly...

A steel support column snapped.

The ceiling began collapsing directly above Anna.

Margaret looked up.

Then, without hesitation...

She shoved Ethan and Lily backward with all her strength.

"What are you doing?"

Ethan shouted.

Margaret smiled through her tears.

"Making the first right decision of my life."

She threw herself across Anna's hospital bed.

CRASH!

Thousands of pounds of concrete buried both women beneath the rubble.

The room fell silent.

Lily screamed until her voice disappeared.

Ethan clawed at the broken stones with his bare hands.

His fingers bled.

His nails tore away.

But it was too late.

The mansion collapsed completely.

Outside...

Firefighters arrived minutes later.

Reporters surrounded the burning ruins.

The headline was already spreading across every news station in America.

BILLIONAIRE'S WEDDING ENDS IN DEADLY EXPLOSION.

Hours later...

At sunrise...

Rescue workers recovered only one body.

It was Margaret Lancaster.

There was no sign of Anna.

No sign of Richard.

The police declared them both dead.

But Ethan noticed something strange.

Margaret's hands were tightly clenched.

As if she had died protecting something.

He carefully opened her fingers.

Inside was a tiny piece of burned paper.

Only one sentence remained readable.

"DON'T TRUST THE DNA TEST."

Ethan's heart stopped.

"What DNA test?"

Just then...

His phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

He answered.

A distorted voice whispered only seven words.

"Lily isn't the child you think."

The call ended.

Ethan slowly looked down at the frightened little girl holding his hand.

She stared back with tear-filled blue eyes.

"Dad..."

His chest tightened.

For the first time...

He wasn't sure if that word was true.
