CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET IN THE LOCKED ROOM

The photograph shook in Ethan Lancaster’s hand.
The entire ballroom had gone silent.
No one laughed anymore.
No one whispered.
Even the bride stood frozen, her white veil trembling against her shoulders.
Ethan stared at the burned photo again.
A younger version of himself.
A newborn baby in his arms.
And those six words on the back:
She never told you the truth.
His mother, Margaret Lancaster, stepped forward with a face as cold as marble.
“Ethan,” she said quietly, “give me that photograph.”
But Ethan didn’t move.
The little girl hid behind him, gripping his suit jacket like her life depended on it.
“What is your name?” Ethan asked, his voice breaking.
The girl looked up at him.
“Lily.”
The name hit him like a bullet.
Because twenty years ago, the woman he loved had once told him:
“If we ever have a daughter, I want to name her Lily.”
Ethan turned slowly toward his mother.
“What did you do?”
Margaret’s eyes sharpened.
“Careful,” she whispered. “You are standing in front of cameras.”
But Ethan no longer cared about cameras.
He no longer cared about the wedding.
He no longer cared about the empire his mother had built around him like a golden prison.
He knelt in front of Lily.
“Where is your mother?”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“In the old Lancaster house.”
A gasp rippled through the crowd.
The old Lancaster house had been abandoned for years.
At least...
That was what everyone believed.
Margaret suddenly shouted, “Enough!”
The little girl flinched.
Ethan stood.
For the first time in his life, he looked at his mother not as a son...
but as a man staring at a stranger.
“You told me Anna died.”
Margaret’s lips tightened.
“She did die.”
Lily shook her head violently.
“No, she didn’t!”
Then she pulled something else from her pocket.
A small hospital bracelet.
Faded.
Cracked.
But the name was still visible.
Baby Girl Lancaster.
The bride covered her mouth.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Margaret’s face finally changed.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Fear.
Ethan grabbed his car keys from the altar table and turned to leave.
His mother stepped in front of him.
“If you walk out now, you lose everything.”
Ethan looked at the billionaire guests.
The cameras.
The bride.
The empire.
Then he looked down at Lily.
A scared child with his eyes.
His answer was quiet.
“Then I lose everything.”
Minutes later, Ethan’s black car tore through the stormy city streets with Lily in the passenger seat.
Behind them, the wedding collapsed into chaos.
Reporters shouted.
Guests called lawyers.
Margaret Lancaster made only one phone call.
Her voice was ice-cold.
“He’s going to the house.”
A pause.
Then she said:
“Make sure he doesn’t find the room.”
At midnight, Ethan reached the old Lancaster mansion.
The gates were rusted.
The windows were black.
The house looked dead.
But Lily pointed to the second floor.
“She’s up there.”
Ethan kicked open the front door.
Dust flew into the air.
The mansion smelled of rain, medicine, and secrets.
They climbed the stairs.
At the end of the hallway stood a locked wooden door.
Lily whispered, “Mommy said only you would know where the key is.”
Ethan froze.
He remembered.
Anna had once hidden a spare key inside the broken grandfather clock.
His hands shook as he opened it.
The key was still there.
When he unlocked the door...
his whole world ended.
Inside the room was a hospital bed.
Machines.
Old letters.
And a woman with pale skin lying under a thin blanket.
Anna.
Alive.
Her eyes slowly opened.
She looked at Ethan.
And smiled weakly.
“You came.”
Ethan rushed to her side, tears filling his eyes.
“Anna... who did this to you?”
Anna’s fingers trembled as she touched his face.
“I tried to tell you,” she whispered. “Your mother took everything from us.”
Ethan looked at Lily.
Then back at Anna.
“Our daughter?”
Anna nodded.
But before Ethan could speak...
A floorboard creaked behind him.
He turned.
Margaret stood in the doorway.
Holding a gun.
Her voice was calm.
“I warned you, Ethan.”
Then she looked at Lily and smiled coldly.
May you like
“That child should have never been born.”
