Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Twist

Three months later.
The city had undergone a complete political earthquake. The Apex Circle was completely dismantled. Dozens of politicians, judges, and high-ranking executives were behind bars, awaiting trial for treason, murder, and high-level corruption.
Victoria Hale was serving a thirty-year sentence in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, her wealth confiscated, her name stripped from every building in the city.
It was a bright, sunny afternoon at the city’s central cemetery.
Julian Vance stood beside a fresh marble tombstone adorned with white lilies. The inscription read:
ELEANOR HALE
A Mother’s Love Surrenders Nothing.
Lily stood beside him, wearing a neat navy blue dress. She looked healthy, her face full of color, her eyes bright and at peace for the first time in her life.
"It's over, Lily," Julian said gently, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Your mother’s name is cleared. The court has officially restored the entire Hale estate to you. You are the sole heir to everything."
Lily looked down at the grave, holding a single white flower in her hand. She knelt down and placed it softly on the marble.
"Thank you, Mommy," Lily whispered.
Julian smiled, taking a deep breath of the fresh morning air. "Come on. Detective Marcus is waiting for us in the car. He promised to take us for ice cream."
Lily nodded and took Julian’s hand. They walked slowly back toward the shiny black sedan parked near the cemetery gates.
As Julian opened the car door for Lily, his phone buzzed in his pocket. It was an encrypted email from an unknown sender.
Julian pulled out his phone and unlocked it.
The email contained a single video attachment. Curiosity getting the better of him, Julian tapped play.
The video opened on a high-security prison interview room. Victoria Hale was sitting at a table, wearing an orange jumpsuit, her hair messy, her eyes hollow.
Sitting across from her was an unseen investigator.
"Victoria," the investigator’s voice spoke on the recording. "We know you managed the accounts. But we found something strange in Eleanor’s medical records from ten years ago—before the asylum."
Victoria laughed softly in the video, a sound so dry and sinister it made the hair on Julian’s neck stand up.
"You think Eleanor was the victim?" Victoria whispered into the camera, leaning close. "You fools... Eleanor wasn't my twin sister. Eleanor wasn't even human. She was the one who created the Apex Circle. I was just her shadow. I locked her away because she was going to destroy the world."
"And the child?" the investigator asked.
Victoria looked directly into the camera lens, her eyes wide with genuine, paralyzing terror.
"Lily isn't Eleanor's daughter," Victoria whispered. "Lily... was the mastermind."
The video cut to black.
Julian’s blood instantly ran cold. The phone nearly slipped from his trembling hands.
He slowly turned his head to look at the backseat of the car.
Lily was sitting quietly, staring out the window at the passing city buildings. On her small lap sat the old leather designer bag.
Slowly, Lily turned her head and looked at Julian through the mirror.
She didn't smile. She didn't cry.

She simply raised one small finger to her lips... and went:
"Shh."
